Studies & Degrees in Biomathematics

Choose where you would like to study Biomathematics:

IndiaThe United States

Biomathematics is a unique field of study, also referred to as mathematical biology. It is an interdisciplinary field, which models natural and biological processes, using mathematical techniques and tools. In other words, biomathematics is there to develop analytical and predictive models of biological and medical systems. For example, data mining and mathematical projections are applied to understand the growth and change of living entities, including bacteria. Genetic codes and diseases are also studied through mathematical biology. Biomathematics programs are quite unique, because students are required to have a strong background in both biology and applied mathematics. Mathematics and statistics programs usually do not train students to be able to deal with empirical data in terms of measurements and biological meaning or to have deep biological knowledge. On the other hand, traditional biology programs elaborate on biological knowledge and techniques but don’t teach much mathematics. The Biomathematics field of study is based upon the fact that much of the research in the next few decades will require sound knowledge that combines empirical data and methods, statistics, and theory.

Personal Qualities

Biomathematics is a demanding field of study, for which you can consider the following qualities and skills:

  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Aptitude for both mathematics and biology
  • Good at research
  • Detail-oriented
  • Good communication skills

Study options

Biomathematics is offered at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level at chosen universities. Courses in Biomathematics normally incorporate courses in mathematics, biology and computer science, most often offered through the collaboration between the mathematics and biology departments. As a student in Biomathematics you should expect to specialize during your junior and senior years in computer science, mathematics, or biology, and continue with advanced interdisciplinary training.

Career Options

Graduates in the field of biomathematics either progress onto graduate programs or find employment in bioinformatics, biostatistics, biomedical engineering, biomathematics and medicine. Careers in neuroscience, ecology and evolutionary biology are other possible options, too.
