Web Technology Study Programs

Level: Professional Development     Location: Madrid

Web technology is the set of languages, standards and tools used to build websites and web applications. On the browser side the three main technologies are HTML, which gives content its structure and meaning, CSS, which applies styles and layout, and JavaScript, which adds interactivity. On the server side, back-end languages run before the result is sent to the browser; a typical task is to take data out of a database and generate the HTML that contains it.

These technologies rest on open standards. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which has developed web standards since 1994, states that its standards define an open web platform for application development. A web technology course therefore teaches programming together with databases, server deployment, security, interface design and accessibility, which the W3C defines as designing websites and tools so that people with disabilities can use them.

Qualifications and levels

Web technology can be studied at several levels, from short courses to university degrees. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that educational requirements for web developers range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree.

  • Vocational training in Spain. The official qualification is Técnico Superior en Desarrollo de Aplicaciones Web (DAW), a higher vocational training (FP de grado superior) programme of 2,000 hours in the Informática y Comunicaciones family. Applicants need the Bachiller, another accepted qualification or an entrance exam. The curriculum includes programming, databases, markup languages, client-side and server-side web development, deployment of web applications and web interface design, plus a training period in a company.
  • How schools teach it. CEU FP Madrid offers the DAW programme over two academic years, on campus or online, in Spanish, with 30 places. Florida Universitària teaches it on its Catarroja campus in two years as dual training, with between 25% and 50% of the training in a company. CCC offers it online, with 500 hours of placements, as an authorised centre of the Community of Madrid. U-tad lists the same programme among its higher vocational courses.
  • College diplomas. In Canada, Camosun College teaches a two-year Information and Computer Systems Technologist diploma with a co-op or internship option; its graduates are prepared for work in web and mobile programming, database design and network administration.
  • University degrees. In Spain a bachelor's degree (grado) has 240 ECTS credits, and DAW graduates can go on to a university degree with possible recognition of modules. Web development is usually part of a computer science or software engineering degree rather than a degree of its own.
  • Short and continuing education courses. SEAS, the online centre of the Grupo San Valero in Zaragoza, lists a Diploma de Especialización Universitaria en Diseño Web y Comercio Electrónico. Under Spanish rules a Diploma de Especialización is a continuing education qualification of 30 to 59 credits, not an official degree.

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 13 active schools for web technology. Seven are in Spain, three in the United States, and Canada, Argentina and Zambia have one each. The Spanish schools include CEU FP Madrid, CCC Centro de Estudios and Aranda Formación in Madrid, U-tad in Las Rozas, Florida Universitària in Catarroja, SEAS in Zaragoza and CENEC in Málaga. Abroad, the list includes Camosun College in Victoria, the Universidad Nacional de San Luis in Argentina, and UMBC and County College of Morris in the United States.

The Spanish vocational programmes are taught in Spanish, and several are available online. When comparing schools, check whether the programme leads to the official Técnico Superior qualification or to the school's own certificate; if the school's page does not say, ask what recognition the qualification has.

Careers

The Spanish ministry's vocational training portal lists three job profiles for DAW graduates: web programmer, multimedia programmer and developer of applications in web environments, in public or private companies, as an employee or self-employed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics distinguishes back-end developers, who build the technical framework of a site, from front-end developers, who create its look and layout.

In the United States, web developers held about 87,400 jobs in 2025, and web developers and digital designers together about 220,100. The Bureau projects employment in the combined group to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 13,600 openings each year. In Spain, DAW graduates can continue with official specialisation courses in artificial intelligence and big data, cybersecurity, or video game development and virtual reality.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a university degree to work as a web developer?

Not always. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, requirements range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree, and some employers prefer a degree in a field such as computer science.

How long is the Spanish web development programme (DAW)?

It is a 2,000-hour higher vocational training programme, which schools such as CEU FP Madrid and Florida Universitària teach over two academic years.

Can I study web development online in Spain?

Yes. CEU FP Madrid offers the DAW programme on campus and online, and CCC offers it online with in-person placements in companies.

What is the difference between front-end and back-end?

Front-end languages (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) run in the browser and produce what the user sees. Back-end languages run on the server, for example to read a database and generate the page.
