Studies & Degrees in Industrial Organization Engineering
Industrial organization engineering (ingeniería de organización industrial) is the Spanish name for the branch of engineering that deals with how companies and production systems are run. In English-speaking countries the closest equivalents are industrial engineering and engineering management. The Universidad de Zaragoza describes it as a management engineering degree: it links technological knowledge with the needs of society and with business management.
Students combine an engineering foundation with management subjects. The first courses cover mathematics, physics, materials and manufacturing processes. Later courses turn to operations: production planning, logistics, quality, maintenance, purchasing, costs and finance, project management, human resources and occupational risk prevention. Mondragon Unibertsitatea, for example, lists subjects such as Manufacturing Processes, Quantitative Methods for Industrial Organization, Optimisation Techniques and Tools, Industrial Project Management and Quality Engineering.
Qualifications and levels
In Spain the subject is studied as an official university degree. Under Royal Decree 822/2021, a bachelor's degree (grado) has 240 ECTS credits, which means four years of full-time study, and an official master's degree has 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits.
- Bachelor's degree. The degree is usually called Grado en Ingeniería de Organización Industrial or Grado en Ingeniería en Organización Industrial. The Universidad de Málaga and the Universidad de Sevilla teach it as a joint degree of 240 ECTS credits over four years, with four possible specialisations: business management, logistics and distribution, production systems, and innovation and technological competitiveness systems. Each university teaches only some of them, so check which ones are available on the campus you choose.
- Master's degree. Graduates can continue with a master's degree in the same field. The Universidad de Sevilla lists the Máster Universitario en Organización Industrial y Gestión de Empresas among the academic options after the bachelor's degree, and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid includes a master's degree in Ingeniería de Organización in its list of official master's programmes.
- Doctorate. A PhD follows the master's degree for those who want a research career.
The Universidad de Málaga states on its degree page that this bachelor's degree does not lead to a regulated profession. Students who want the regulated profession of industrial engineer in Spain should ask the university which master's degree gives access to it. Both the Málaga degree and the Mondragon Unibertsitatea degree state that they hold the EUR-ACE label, a European quality label for engineering programmes.
Where to study it
SpainExchange lists 13 active schools for this subject, all of them in Spain. They are universities in Madrid, Seville, Málaga, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Vigo, Vic, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Basque Country (Bilbao, Vitoria, San Sebastián and Mondragón).
The programmes differ in format. Some examples:
- The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid teaches the Grado en Ingeniería de Organización at its Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales, a school founded in 1845.
- Mondragon Unibertsitatea teaches the degree at its Arrasate-Mondragón campus in Spanish, Basque and English, with a dual model that includes paid work placements from the second year.
- The Universidad de Zaragoza offers two routes: a civil one at the Escuela Universitaria Politécnica de La Almunia, on campus or in a blended online format, and a military one at the Centro Universitario de la Defensa.
Teaching is mainly in Spanish. The Universidad de Málaga gives Spanish as the language of its degree, so international students need a good level of Spanish. Students with a foreign school-leaving qualification normally apply through UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses the academic records of international students for admission to Spanish bachelor's degrees. Each university sets its own admission criteria, so ask the university first.
Careers
Graduates work in the management of industrial and service companies. The Universidad de Málaga names functional areas such as production, logistics, quality, maintenance, purchasing, sales, costs and finance. Mondragon Unibertsitatea lists typical positions: production manager, purchasing manager, logistics management and quality manager. Consulting firms and public administration are other employers.
Spain does not publish a separate employment forecast for this degree. As an international reference, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes industrial engineers as professionals who devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information and energy. It projects employment of industrial engineers in the United States to grow 12 percent from 2025 to 2035, and notes that they typically need a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering or a related field.
Frequently asked questions
Is industrial organization engineering the same as industrial engineering?
It is the Spanish degree closest to what other countries call industrial engineering or engineering management. It focuses on the organisation and management of production, logistics and quality rather than on designing machines or installations.
How long does the degree take in Spain?
The bachelor's degree has 240 ECTS credits and takes four years. An official master's degree adds 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits.
Can I study it in English?
Most programmes are taught in Spanish. Mondragon Unibertsitatea lists Spanish, Basque and English as languages of its degree. Ask each university how many subjects it teaches in English.
Can I study it online?
The Universidad de Zaragoza offers its civil route at La Almunia in a blended online format as well as on campus. Most other programmes are taught on campus.
