Geometry is a branch of mathematics that is concerned with size, shape, relative positions of figures and the properties of space including lines, points, planes and curves. Briefly, according to mathematicians, it is all about shapes and their properties, and can be classified as plane geometry and solid geometry. Plane geometry pertains to flat shapes, like lines, triangles or circles which can be drawn on a sheet of paper, while solid geometry, to objects such as prisms, pyramids and cubes. The basic concepts in geometry include line, which extends in both direction; point, which has neither length nor width and is just in exact position; intersection, where a line, line segment or ray and figure meet and share a common point; line segment, that has two distinct end points but does not extend; ray, which is a line that begins at a point and extends in one direction; end point, which defines a line segment or ray; and parallel line, which consists of two lines in the same plane which do not meet or intersect.

Geometry can be studied in many schools under a mathematics degree program. It is important to remember that there is no such title as a degree in geometry except when it is taken as an integral part of mathematics course that covers such other subjects as trigonometry, algebra and calculus. If you are interested in geometry, therefore, you will enroll in a mathematics course and be required to have skills in problem solving, critical reasoning and analytical thinking. A major in general mathematics or mathematics education covers all major branches of mathematics such as geometry, algebra, calculus and trigonometry. Other possible courses include lineal algebra, statistics, linear programming, and mathematical ideas.

In the University of the South in Tennessee, a mathematics course concentrates on one or more areas of mathematics but has specific topics of geometry, calculus, probability, group theory, number theory, international methods in physics, and linear algebra. The Eastern Michigan University also offers courses for the degree in mathematics that include geometry and algebra. A graduate study program at the University of Illinois offers courses in geometry and topology, an another branch of mathematics, with specific subjects in Differential Geometry, Global Analysis, Differential Topology, Algebraic Topology, Geometric and Polyhedral Topology, Algebraic Geometry, Computer Geometry and Problems in Classical Geometry. A non-degree course on geometry at the University of Carolina allows learners to perform operations to solve problems with real numbers, and the use of geometric and algebraic properties of figures, and teach them how to transform geometric figures algebraically. Geometry can also be studied online through programs sponsored by universities like the University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois, University of Houston, and the University of Idaho. These are designed for students pursuing engineering courses or who want to learn geometric theories and applications.

Mathematics graduates with geometry as a concentration face bright careers in business, finance and engineering as actuary or registrar, financial analyst, business consultant, operations research analyst, and teacher.
