The Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies explores the evolution of language and literature from the 12^th century to the present. Most of these languages fall under the category of Indo-Aryan languages (mostly Indo-Germanic); although in some regions of the country Dravidian-based languages were and continue to be spoken informally among the people.

The literary development of India’s modern languages was gradual, occurring at different times throughout the years, beginning with the two earliest of the modern languages that emerged: Marathi and Gujarati. Next came the most significant modern Indian language, Hindi, the language that together with English serves as the official language of the country to this day. It is also the most commonly spoken language of the Indian people—a language that consists of several regional dialects including Kanauji, Bundeli and Braj Bhasa.
