Master of Science in Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory
The Master of Science degree in Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory is a full-time graduate-level program designed to educate and train individuals who plan to pursue a career as a medical laboratory specialist, and certify them in the latest techniques that are regularly employed in these positions. Students participating in this program will be exposed to a wide range of specialties, including microbiology, hematology, chemistry, transfusion services, immunology, and molecular diagnostics.
Upon graduation, those who earn an M.S degree in Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory will play an invaluable role in the medical process, particularly in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of illnesses and diseases. Graduates will be trained to use state-of-the-art and very sophisticated equipment to perform tests and analyze blood, cells, urine and other bodily fluids to detect abnormalities in the patient. These professionals are a significant source of diagnostic information for doctors who use these tests to determine and monitor a proper course of treatment.
To be eligible for admission to this program, candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in the same or related field—a field in the sciences such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry or microbiology. Certain universities may also require a passing score on an entrance examination and/or an interview with the appropriate faculty.
Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Management
As you might have guessed, the Master of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Management is also a graduate-level program, but instead of training individuals to become laboratory specialists, this program focuses more on the business side of the clinical laboratory, teaching students how to effectively manage staff and oversee the lab’s daily operations.
The M.S. in Clinical Laboratory Management gives students a unique opportunity to learn the practical skills and acquire the credentials to manage clinical laboratories. The program is divided into four sections—finance, operations, personnel and marketing—giving students a comprehensive and well-rounded management education and providing them with the skills they’ll need to become effective and productive laboratory managers. The program requires approximately 36 credit hours depending on the institution, during which students will be challenged to make important management decisions and, following graduation, will possess the administrative capabilities needed to fill a vital management role within the laboratory setting.
To be eligible for admission into the Master of Science Degree program in Clinical Laboratory Management, students must possess at least a bachelor degree in one of the business fields—fields that may include business management, finance, marketing and business administration. Some institutions may also require two or more years of practical experience working in a clinical laboratory, either in a diagnostic or operational role.
