Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Biochemistry: Course Description
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Biochemistry is a three to four-year undergraduate course of study in biotechnology. The program places emphasis on the study of living cells and/or their components and the medical and industrial applications of such substances. The course is designed to prepare students for career positions in biotechnology and related industries, careers that have grown rapidly over the past several years.
Students pursuing a B.S. degree in Industrial Biochemistry will learn and master the traditional biotechnological processes, which include the use of microorganisms to produce alcohol or antibiotics. Students will also acquire advanced knowledge and skills in some of the more modern biotechnological processes, including the use of genetic engineering to produce protein-based drugs, such as Interferon; engineered plants which are drought or pesticide resistant; and/or transgenic animals—animals with novel and very special characteristics, including a faster growth cycle.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Biochemistry: Coursework
Like all undergraduate degree programs, the Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Biochemistry includes both core and elective coursework in addition to the general education requirements of the specific college or university. General education requirements typically include classes in subjects such as the natural and physical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; English composition; communications and speech; foreign languages; and mathematics. These general education classes can be taken either prior to commencing with the program’s required coursework or concurrently, the latter of which is recommended.
The core courses for the B.S. program in Industrial Biochemistry include:
