Master of Arts Degree in Dutch Language and Literature:  Course Description
 
The Master of Arts Degree in Dutch Language and Literature is a graduate-level course of study offered at thousands of colleges and universities around the world.  The program, which typically spans two years in duration for full-time students, offers students a thorough education in Netherland studies, an academic discipline that focuses on three general areas:  Dutch as a system of language, Dutch as a system of communication and Dutch as a literary system.  Borrowing from a number of different disciplines, the comprehensive nature of the Master of Arts Degree in Dutch Language and Literature is quite unique, allowing students to create a program that matches their personal interests.
 
Master of Arts Degree in Dutch Language and Literature:  Coursework and Eligibility Requirements
 
The coursework for the Master of Arts Degree program in Dutch Language and Literature includes both core and elective classes, through which students have the option of combining literary, linguistic and communication perspectives at an advanced academic level.  In the first year of the program the emphasis is usually placed on studies in the Dutch language, with topics that may include:
 
·      &a mp;n bsp;  Classification of the Dutch Language.  Dutch belongs to its own West Germanic sub-group, West Low Franconian, paired with its sister language Limburgian, or East Low Franconian, both of which stand out by mixing characteristics of Low German and German.

·      &a mp;n bsp;  Prevalence of the Dutch Language.  Dutch is the native language for most people living in the Netherlands, and about sixty percent of the populations of Belgium and Suriname.  The language is most prevalent in Europe, where it is a first language for about 23 million people and a second language for another 5 million.  It also holds official status in the Caribbean island nations of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.
 
The second half of the program features courses that deal with a wide array of topics, including Dutch Linguistics, Medieval Dutch literature, Early Modern Dutch Literature, Modern Dutch Literature, Applications of the Dutch Language, and Dutch Language Use and Discourse Studies.
 
To qualify for admission into the M.A. degree program in Dutch Language and Literature students must possess, at minimum, a bachelor degree, preferably in a language or literature field, and have a 2.8 grade point average or better in all core and elective coursework.  Letters of recommendation may also be required by certain colleges and universities, as will a passing score on an entrance examination prior to admission.
