Architecture Studies in Venezuela

Architecture in Venezuela is a long undergraduate degree taught at universities and leading directly to the professional title of Arquitecto. Teaching is in Spanish and is built around the design studio, supported by technology, history, urban studies and environmental subjects. The two universities with architecture programmes listed on SpainExchange are both public: one in Caracas and one in Mérida, in the Andes.

Spain's foreign ministry, in travel advice valid on 8 October 2026, recommends extreme caution when travelling to Venezuela. Read the current advice for your nationality before planning a stay.

How the degree is organised

The Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) shows how the degree works. Its Escuela de Arquitectura Carlos Raúl Villanueva structures the studies in 10 semesters, divided into three cycles. Design (Diseño) is the core subject and forms a compulsory chain through all 10 semesters. The other subjects belong to five knowledge areas: technology, urban studies, history and criticism of architecture, environmental conditioning, and methods.

To obtain the degree of Arquitecto at the UCV, a student must pass 170 credits: 128 in compulsory subjects, 32 in electives and 10 in optional subjects. The total includes a final degree project (Trabajo Final de Grado), presented in the last design course. The school runs three teaching periods a year, two regular and one intensive.

By law, every undergraduate student in Venezuela must also complete community service before graduating. It lasts at least 120 academic hours, spread over no less than three months.

Postgraduate study (postgrado) consists of specialisations, master's degrees and doctorates. The UCV's Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism lists doctorates in architecture and in urbanism, and a specialisation in museology that has run since 1996.

Where to study architecture

  • Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), Caracas. Its school of architecture was created by decree on 13 October 1941 and, according to the faculty, was the first centre for teaching architecture in the country. Teaching began in 1944 and the first class graduated in 1948. The school became the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) on 20 October 1953. Since 1957 it has occupied a building designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva on the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas campus, which UNESCO added to the World Heritage List in 2000. The school has about 1,500 students. The faculty also includes the Instituto de Urbanismo and the Instituto de Desarrollo Experimental de la Construcción (IDEC)
  • Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), Mérida. A national autonomous university financed by the State, with origins that go back to 1785. Its Faculty of Architecture and Design (FADULA) in Mérida teaches Arquitectura and Diseño Industrial. The ULA has 11 faculties and teaches most degrees on a semester system

Admission for international students

Places at public universities are allocated partly through the national admission system (Sistema Nacional de Ingreso, CNU-OPSU) and partly through each university's own routes. At the UCV the general route is SIMADI, which combines the average mark from the first four years of secondary school with an online test of verbal and numerical reasoning. Applicants who finished secondary school abroad may take part, but their documents must be legalised in Venezuela.

The school of architecture lists further routes:

  • Equivalences, for students who started an architecture degree at another university in Venezuela or abroad
  • A diplomatic agreement, for children of diplomats accredited in the country
  • Admission for athletes or artists with a recognised record

The UCV also admits foreign students under cultural agreements with other countries, on condition of reciprocity for Venezuelan students. Each faculty decides on these applications. Foreign nationals need a visa for stays of more than three months, according to the Spanish travel advice.

Recognition of the qualification

In Venezuela, the recognition of foreign university degrees (reválida) is reserved for the national universities. At the UCV, a foreign degree can be revalidated if its study plan matches a UCV plan by 80% or more and the applicant passes the required exams. When the school of architecture was created in 1941, one of its first tasks was to process degrees obtained by architects at foreign universities. Graduates who want to practise outside Venezuela need to follow the recognition procedure of the country where they plan to work.

Careers

According to the UCV, an architect is trained to organise and design habitable spaces and to solve problems related to the environment. Architects also research construction systems, prepare design projects for all kinds of buildings, inspect and supervise building works and remodel existing buildings. Postgraduate routes lead into urbanism, research or museum work. No current official employment figures for architecture graduates were found.
