Mechanical Engineering Schools and Programs in Venezuela

2 schools in Venezuela teach Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering Studies in Venezuela

Mechanical engineering (ingeniería mecánica) is taught in Venezuela as a full undergraduate engineering degree at universities, in Spanish. Students learn to design, build and operate machines and equipment, with a base in mathematics and physics followed by professional subjects such as machine design, energy, automation and production technology. The two universities with mechanical engineering programmes listed on SpainExchange are both public: one in Caracas and one in Mérida, in the Andes.

Spain's foreign ministry, in travel advice valid on 8 October 2026, recommends extreme caution when travelling to Venezuela. Read the current advice for your nationality before planning a stay.

How the degree is organised

Undergraduate engineering studies (pregrado) lead to the professional title of engineer; the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) speaks of training Ingenieros Mecánicos. Universities count the study load in credit units (unidades crédito) and most teach in semesters.

The UCV's School of Mechanical Engineering describes the history of its own programme. In 1951 the university adopted a study plan that extended engineering to five years. In 1958 the degree in mechanical engineering was established as such, together with the credit unit, the semester system and the weighted average. The plan has a basic cycle (ciclo básico) followed by a professional cycle (ciclo profesional).

Teaching at the school covers four areas, each with its own department: automation (Automática), design (Diseño), energy (Energética) and production. Students take basic and compulsory subjects with their laboratories, plus electives that go deeper into specific areas.

By law, every undergraduate student in Venezuela must also complete community service before graduating. It lasts at least 120 academic hours, spread over no less than three months.

Postgraduate study

Postgraduate studies (postgrado) consist of specialisations, master's degrees and doctorates. The UCV's School of Mechanical Engineering offers two programmes:

  • A master's degree leading to the title of Magister Scientiarum in mechanical engineering, lasting six semesters
  • A specialisation in pipe design (Especialista en Diseño de Tubería), lasting four semesters

Both have day and evening timetables. Applicants need a university degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.

Where to study mechanical engineering

  • Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), Caracas. The School of Mechanical Engineering belongs to the Faculty of Engineering and gives 1953 as its year of creation. The origin of the degree goes back to 1944, when engineering studies at the university were diversified into new specialities. The faculty's research institutes include the Instituto de Mecánica de Fluidos (IMF), and the school lists student project groups such as Aerodesign SAE, Mini Baja SAE and Fórmula SAE-UCV. The main campus, the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2000
  • Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), Mérida. A national autonomous university financed by the State, with origins that go back to 1785. Its Faculty of Engineering in Mérida teaches Ingeniería Mecánica alongside civil, electrical, geological, chemical and systems engineering. The ULA has 11 faculties and teaches most degrees on a semester system

Admission and recognition

Places at public universities are allocated partly through the national admission system (Sistema Nacional de Ingreso, CNU-OPSU) and partly through each university's own routes. At the UCV the general route is SIMADI, which applies to all degrees. It combines the average mark from the first four years of secondary school with an online test of verbal and numerical reasoning. Applicants who finished secondary school abroad may take part, but their documents must be legalised in Venezuela.

The UCV also admits foreign students under cultural agreements with other countries, on condition of reciprocity for Venezuelan students. Each faculty decides on these applications. Foreign nationals need a visa for stays of more than three months, according to the Spanish travel advice.

The recognition of foreign university degrees in Venezuela (reválida) is reserved for the national universities. At the UCV, a foreign degree can be revalidated if its study plan matches a UCV plan by 80% or more and the applicant passes the required exams. Engineers who want to work outside Venezuela with a Venezuelan degree need to follow the recognition procedure of the destination country.

Careers

The UCV school states that its aim is to train professionals able to design, build and operate equipment, to adapt and create technology and to do research in the different areas of mechanical engineering. The four teaching areas point to the typical fields of work: machine and product design, energy and thermal systems, automation and control, and manufacturing. No current official employment figures for engineering graduates were found.

Frequently asked questions

Which universities teach mechanical engineering in Venezuela?

SpainExchange lists the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas and the Universidad de Los Andes in Mérida. Both are public universities and teach in Spanish.

Can I do a master's degree in mechanical engineering in Venezuela?

Yes. The UCV offers a Magister Scientiarum programme of six semesters and a four-semester specialisation in pipe design. Both require a university degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.

How are foreign applicants admitted to the UCV?

Through the SIMADI process, if their secondary school documents are legalised in Venezuela, or under a reciprocal cultural agreement between the UCV and their country.

Is community service compulsory for engineering students?

Yes. Venezuelan law requires at least 120 academic hours of community service, over no less than three months, to obtain a higher education degree.
