Presently, more than 3,000 private colleges and 130 public colleges and universities in Indonesia cater to over five million students, both local and international. To enhance the capabilities of colleges and university education in Indonesia, the United States is planning to invest USD 19 million in higher education in Indonesia through the Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) program.

Upon graduating from high schools or colleges, students attend public or private universities. All universities in Indonesia are authorized to award all degrees; Associate (Ahli Madya), Bachelor’s (Sarjana Muda or Sarjana I and Sarjana II), Master’s (Magister) as well as Doctoral (Doktor).

  • Sarjana II is conferred upon students who successfully complete two more years or education after receiving Sarjana I.  This degree is subject specific and is ranked at the same level as a Master’s Degree in Indonesia.

  • Doktor or Doctoral degree is research intensive and requires students to successfully complete a thesis in three to four years.
Although public universities in Indonesia offer the best education, currently, they can accommodate just 50 percent of the aspiring students. Others have to attend private universities, institutes, academies, and polytechnics, which are costlier. Hence, there is a need to aid public universities in Indonesia for growth.

With Indonesia having forged amicable relations with Australia and the US in the recent past, more international students are pursuing their Master’s in Indonesia.  They are admitted to full-degree programs based on entrance exam and language exam scores. Indonesia caters to a community of 6000 international students among whom University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University and Bandung Institute of Technology are most popular.

Most popular colleges in Indonesia are Bogor Institute of Agriculture, Institute of Teacher Training and Science of Education in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Medan and Bandung, Jakarta Institute of Management Studies and Lembaba Pendidikan Perkebunan – an Agro Estate Plantation Training institute.
