About Hamburg
Hamburg, in the north of Germany, is the country's second-largest city and a federal state in its own right. Built around a large port on the river Elbe, it is a centre for trade, logistics, media and aviation, and its canals, lakes and harbour give the city a maritime character.
For students, Hamburg offers postgraduate programmes in management and law at specialised private schools, a wide choice of German courses and the life of a large, international city. Most degree programmes at the public universities are taught in German, so many international students start with a language course.

The NIT Northern Institute of Technology Management was founded in 1998 by professors of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) as the first business school in northern Germany, and it is based on the TUHH campus in Harburg. It teaches management to engineers and scientists in its Technology Management programme (MBA/M.A.), which can be combined with an engineering or science master's degree at the TUHH for a double degree, and it offers a Master of Science in Business Analytics & AI. Its MBA is accredited by FIBAA, and the school states that students from 67 nationalities have studied there so far.
Bucerius Law School, a private law school in Hamburg, runs the Master of Law and Business (MLB/LLM), a postgraduate programme for young professionals that combines law and business, together with WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management.

Cost of living for students
State universities in Germany generally charge no tuition for bachelor's degrees and most master's degrees, according to the DAAD, while private institutions such as business and law schools charge substantial fees. All students pay a semester contribution of between €70 and €430.
Hamburg is one of the more expensive German cities for housing. The DAAD estimates student living costs at €900 to €1,200 a month, with rent averaging €410 a month across Germany. The Studierendenwerk Hamburg offers about 4,770 places in 26 residences, with all-inclusive rent, for students enrolled at its partner universities.
Students from outside the EU who need a visa must prove funds of €992 a month (DAAD figure as of 1 January 2025). German-taught degrees usually require level B2, while English-taught international and postgraduate programmes are exempt. A prospective student visa is valid for up to nine months and also covers a language course; a Schengen visa covers language courses of up to three months only and cannot be extended.
Getting around and daily life
Hamburg has underground (U-Bahn) and suburban (S-Bahn) lines, buses and harbour ferries that are part of the public transport network. Since January 2026 the Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month and is valid on local transport throughout Germany; where a university offers it as a Deutschlandsemesterticket, students pay 60% of that price. Hamburg Airport is linked to the city centre by S-Bahn.
