About Language Immersion Courses in Honduras

Spanish is the language of daily life in Honduras, so a course here means practising outside class from the first day. Language schools in Honduras are small private businesses rather than part of the state education system. Most teach Spanish to adult visitors, often one-to-one, and combine lessons with a homestay so that students hear and use Spanish at home as well.

The two schools listed on SpainExchange are both in La Ceiba, a town on the Caribbean coast close to Pico Bonito National Park and the Cayos Cochinos islands.

How courses work

Immersion courses in Honduras are usually sold by the week. Honduras Spanish School (HOSS), with locations in La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa, is a typical example:

  • 20 hours of class a week, 4 hours a day, in the morning and afternoon
  • one teacher per student, covering conversation, grammar, reading and vocabulary for the student's job or interests
  • a small school with room for 10 students
  • a homestay with a private room and bathroom and three meals a day (except on Sundays) in La Ceiba
  • a diploma of attendance at the end of the course

In Tegucigalpa the same school teaches at the student's accommodation, office or another chosen place, but does not offer homestays. It also runs online classes and a dental volunteer programme for students or professionals in dentistry. The second school in our list, Central America Spanish School, is also in La Ceiba.

Levels and certificates

A school's diploma of attendance shows that a course was taken, but it is not an official language qualification. For an official certificate, students can take the DELE, which the Instituto Cervantes awards on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. The DELE covers all six CEFR levels, from A1 to C2, and candidates can register without having taken a specific course. Students who need a certificate for work or university should ask a school whether it prepares for the DELE and where the nearest exam centre is.

Costs

Fees are usually quoted in US dollars. For 2026 HOSS lists:

  • US$300 a week for 20 one-to-one lessons (tuition only)
  • US$450 a week for lessons plus a homestay with full board
  • US$15 an hour for individual lessons
  • a US$100 registration fee to reserve a place, with payment due at least 15 days before arrival

Extras add up: air conditioning at the host family costs US$30 a week, and excursions are paid separately, at about US$30 to US$50 each according to the school.

Entry and visas

Entry rules depend on nationality, and Honduras is part of the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The UK government's travel advice, for example, says that British citizens must have a visa to visit Honduras, that passports must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival, and that visitors receive a 30-day entry stamp. Those who come to study must meet the Honduran government's entry requirements, so check the rules for your passport with a Honduran embassy or consulate before booking.

How to choose a school

Compare the number of class hours per week, whether teaching is one-to-one or in groups, and what the weekly price includes (meals, Wi-Fi, airport pick-up, materials). Ask whether homestays are available in the city you choose, how teachers are trained, and whether the school offers DELE preparation. Location shapes free time too: La Ceiba is close to rafting on the Cangrejal River and hiking in Pico Bonito National Park, while Tegucigalpa is the capital, with its museums and colonial centre.
