Language Immersion Courses in Panama

Spanish is the main language of Panama, so a course here means learning in a country where you hear and use Spanish every day. Spanish courses for foreigners are taught mainly by private language schools and, in Panama City, by the Universidad de Panamá's language centre. Many schools are in places that visitors already know: the capital, the highland town of Boquete in Chiriquí province, and the Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro.

How Spanish courses work

Most courses follow the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). Schools place you in a group or in private classes according to your level. Typical formats are group courses, private lessons, intensive courses and courses combined with activities.

The Universidad de Panamá's Centro de Lenguas is a useful reference. It runs semester courses in Spanish for foreigners at all levels from A1 to C2, with daytime and evening groups and some classes online; in the second semester of 2026, classes ran from 24 August to 28 November. Students can ask for a placement test before enrolling.

Certificates and accreditation

A private school's own certificate shows that you attended a course, but it is not an official qualification. For an official certificate, many students take the DELE. According to the Instituto Cervantes, DELE diplomas are official qualifications awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education; they cover all CEFR levels and have indefinite validity and international recognition. If you plan to take the DELE, ask the school whether it offers exam preparation and where the nearest exam centre is.

The Instituto Cervantes also runs SACIC, an accreditation system for schools that teach Spanish as a foreign language. If accreditation matters to you, check the Instituto Cervantes list rather than relying on a school's own description.

Admission and visa

Language schools usually have no academic entry requirements: you choose a start date and level and book directly with the school. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. Panama's Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains that a consul can stamp a visa when the traveller meets the entry requirements, or issue an authorised visa after approval by the Servicio Nacional de Migración (SNM). Costs

Prices are quoted in US dollars and differ by school, course intensity and season. At the Universidad de Panamá's Centro de Lenguas, a semester course cost the general public $200 in the second semester of 2026, paid in one instalment. For a private school, ask what the price includes, such as registration, materials, accommodation and activities.

• Setting: a large city, a highland town such as Boquete or an island setting such as Bocas del Toro each offer a very different daily life
• Intensity: compare hours per week and the balance between group and private lessons
• Goal: general conversation, Spanish for work or DELE exam preparation
• Accommodation: homestay, shared housing or independent options, and how far they are from the school
• Climate: Panama has a tropical climate with heavy rain at times; the national weather service IMHPA publishes forecasts and warnings
• Quality: check accreditations on the accrediting body's own list and read the school's terms for cancellations and changes
