About Language Immersion Courses in El Salvador
El Salvador is a small Spanish-speaking country on the Pacific coast of Central America. For language learners it offers full immersion in everyday Central American Spanish, combined with a short distance between colonial towns, volcanoes and the surf coast. Language schools here are small private businesses that teach Spanish to foreigners through one-to-one or small-group classes, homestays and excursions.
SpainExchange lists one language school in El Salvador: El Salvador Spanish Schools, based in Santa Ana, about one hour from San Salvador according to the school.
How Spanish courses work
Each school sets its own course structure. A typical model is the one used by El Salvador Spanish Schools: 20 hours of classes a week (four hours a day), a start on any Monday and a placement test on arrival. Groups are limited to eight students, and one-to-one classes are available. The school teaches in Santa Ana, San Salvador and San Miguel and on the coast at El Zunzal and Puerto La Libertad, and also offers online classes with a native speaker.
Beyond general Spanish, the school offers courses adapted to specific groups, such as Spanish for medical professionals, teachers and volunteer and religious workers.
The internationally recognised Spanish diplomas are the DELE, official titles awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education, which cover all CEFR levels from A1 to C2. The Instituto Cervantes also runs an accreditation system for Spanish-teaching centres (SACIC), with an evaluation repeated every three years. Ask any school whether it prepares for DELE and whether it holds an accreditation; never assume it does.
Semester programmes and academic credit
Some schools offer longer programmes for university students. El Salvador Spanish Schools runs 14-week spring and fall semesters, each made up of four 3-credit courses of three weeks, plus 4- or 8-week programmes starting in January or July. It issues grade transcripts and written evaluations, but credit is generally granted by the student's home institution, so check with your university before you go.
Admission
Admission to a private language course is open: you fill in an application, state your level and start date, and take a placement test. As a guide, the school above describes its intermediate level as needing one to two years of prior study and its advanced level three years or more.
Entry rules depend on nationality. Spain's foreign ministry notes, for example, that Spanish citizens need no visa for tourist stays of up to 180 days; for longer study, the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners (DGME) has a temporary residence for study (form F10).
Costs, accommodation and safety
Prices are set by each school and are usually quoted in US dollars. Programmes often bundle classes, a homestay and excursions; at El Salvador Spanish Schools, homestay students can choose one, two, three or no meals a day and usually have a private room with a shared bathroom, and the school offers two or three excursions a week to places such as the Tazumal and Joya de Cerén archaeological sites. Read the cancellation policy before paying: this school charges US$100 for cancellations more than 14 days before the start and gives no refunds after the programme begins.
As of 2026, Spain's foreign ministry advises travelling to El Salvador with caution, notes that the state of exception (Régimen de Excepción) remains in force throughout the country, and recommends travelling with medical and travel insurance.
