About Language Immersion Courses in Ukraine
Ukrainian is the official state language of Ukraine, and courses of Ukrainian as a foreign language are what most language schools in the country offer to international students. Since 29 August 2024 there is an official framework for them: the National Commission on State Language Standards approved the standard "Ukrainian as a foreign language. General proficiency levels A1–C2" (decision No. 279), which describes six levels from A1 to C2.
Our directory lists one language school in Ukraine, in Kyiv. The country is at war, which shapes every practical decision about studying there, so this page starts with safety.
Safety and travel in 2026
Martial law is in place in Ukraine. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to most of the country, including Kyiv, and against all but essential travel to several western regions, including Lviv (advice still current on 7 October 2026). It reports that Russian missile and drone attacks take place frequently across the country and that Ukraine's airspace remains closed. Check your own government's travel advice and your insurance before you book; online lessons are the alternative many learners use.
How Ukrainian courses work
The Echo Eastern Europe Language School (EchoEE) was founded in Kyiv in 2004 and is based in Podil, the historic centre, near Poshtova Ploshcha metro station. It teaches Ukrainian at all levels from A1 to C2, in Kyiv and, by arrangement, in Lviv, Dnipro and Odesa. Typical formats are:
- Intensive group course: 20 lessons of 45 minutes a week, in groups of 4 to 8 students, starting every working Monday
- Groups for expats living in Kyiv: 4 lessons a week
- Individual and semi-individual lessons, intensive or spread over a longer stay
- Summer school with options such as tourism, mass media, medicine, business, cinema and theatre or literature
- Live online lessons, including courses for business, law and medicine
- A one-year academic programme from September to June: 720 lessons of 40 minutes, from total beginner to B1, as preparation for higher education in Ukraine
Group courses outside Kyiv run only when at least three students of the same level apply for the same dates.
Admission, visa and exams
Language courses have no entry requirements: groups start from total beginner level and a placement test sets the level. For a long stay, students from countries that need a visa apply for a type D (long-term) student visa at a Ukrainian embassy or consulate, according to Study in Ukraine, the government's portal for international students. The application needs, among other documents, an invitation to study, and foreign documents must be legalised and translated into Ukrainian or English. For the one-year programme, EchoEE sends the invitation letter after full prepayment and asks for a passport and a secondary school diploma with apostille.
The state exam on proficiency in the Ukrainian language for foreigners who want to become citizens can only be taken in Ukraine, at approved centres in Kyiv and the Lviv and Kharkiv regions. A result of 70% or more gives a state certificate at level B1, and the fee for foreigners is three times the monthly subsistence minimum for working-age people. EchoEE offers preparation for this kind of test, including for applicants for residency or citizenship.
Costs
On EchoEE's price list (October 2026), an intensive group course costs EUR 110 per week, intensive one-to-one lessons EUR 220 per week and the expat group EUR 40 per week. Online lessons start at EUR 11 per 45-minute lesson, and the one-year academic programme starts at EUR 2,800. A room with a host family in Kyiv costs from EUR 220 per week, without meals.
How to choose a course
- Safety first: decide between studying in Ukraine and online after reading current official travel advice
- Goal: everyday Ukrainian, a profession (medicine, law, business), university entry or the state exam
- Intensity: 20 lessons a week for fast progress, 4 to 6 a week if you live and work in Ukraine
- Certificate: a school's certificate of attendance is not the same as the state certificate issued after the official exam
- Accommodation: host family, rented flat, or your own arrangements
