Studies & Degrees in Tax Consultancy for Businesses

Tax consultancy for businesses (asesoría fiscal de empresas in Spanish) trains the advisers who handle a company's taxes. Tax advisers prepare and file returns, review whether the company complies with its obligations, keep management informed of changes in tax law, bring tax into business decisions such as a restructuring or an investment abroad, and represent the company in inspections and disputes with the tax administration. Many specialise in one area, such as corporate tax, indirect taxes or international taxation.

The syllabus of the Máster de Formación Permanente en Asesoría Fiscal at the Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir (UCV) shows the usual content: personal income and wealth taxes, indirect taxes such as VAT, corporate tax and business restructuring, international taxation, regional and local taxes, tax procedures and appeals, an introduction to accounting, and professional ethics, plus an internship and a final project of 6 ECTS each.

Qualifications and levels

Tax law is national, so a programme prepares for the tax system of one country. In Spain the subject is taught mainly at postgraduate level, after a degree in law, economics or business administration. Under Royal Decree 822/2021, an official master's degree (máster universitario) has 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. Universities also award their own lifelong-learning qualifications, which must be clearly distinguished from official degrees: the Máster de Formación Permanente (60, 90 or 120 ECTS), the Diploma de Especialización (30 to 59 credits) and the Diploma de Experto (fewer than 30 credits). Business schools and training centres add their own master's programmes and shorter courses.

Two current examples:

  • ENAE Business School, in Murcia, runs the 36th edition of its Máster en Asesoría Fiscal from 19 October 2026. It has 60 ECTS credits and three formats: on campus (classes on Mondays and Tuesdays from 16:30 to 21:30), live online, and blended with an on-campus phase of two to three weeks in Murcia.
  • UCV teaches its Máster de Formación Permanente en Asesoría Fiscal (60 credits) from 11 September 2026 to 15 June 2027 in hybrid format, on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The published price is €5,990. Combined with the official Máster Universitario en Abogacía y Procura it becomes a double programme of 16 months priced at €10,900, aimed at law graduates.

Professionals who only need to keep up to date can use continuing training: AFIGE, for example, is an online business training provider with courses in tax, legal, accounting, finance and employment matters.

Where to study it

SpainExchange lists 11 active schools for this subject: 10 in Spain and one in Italy. The Spanish schools are business schools, university foundations and training centres in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Málaga, Granada and other cities, and several teach online.

Programmes in Spain deal with Spanish taxes and are generally taught in Spanish. Before enrolling, check whether the programme is an official master's degree, a Máster de Formación Permanente or a school's own qualification.

Applicants with a foreign degree can often enrol without homologation. UCV admits graduates from outside the European Higher Education Area once it has checked that their degree is equivalent to a Spanish official degree. For its official master's, students resident outside the EU pay 50% of the price as a reservation, which is required for the admission letter used in the visa application.

Careers

Graduates work in tax advisory firms, law firms, the tax or finance departments of companies, and as self-employed advisers. No official employment statistics are published for this specialisation on its own.

The requirements of the Asociación Española de Asesores Fiscales (AEDAF) show what the profession expects in Spain. To join, a tax adviser needs a university degree with training in tax matters, or another degree plus a postgraduate course or accredited specialisation in tax, for example a master's in tax consultancy. Law, economics and business administration degrees are named expressly; other degrees, including foreign ones of an equivalent level, count with at least 12 credits in taxation, accounting and public finance. Members must also have at least three years' experience in tax advice as their main activity. AEDAF states that membership of a professional college (colegiación) is not required.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to study to become a tax adviser in Spain?

The usual route is a degree in law, economics or business administration followed by a master's in tax consultancy. These are also the qualifications that AEDAF, the Spanish association of tax advisers, asks of its members.

How long does a master's in tax consultancy take?

One academic year for a 60 ECTS programme. The ENAE Business School programme starts in October and the UCV programme runs from September to June.

Can I study tax consultancy online?

Yes. ENAE Business School offers its master's live online and in a blended format, UCV teaches in hybrid format, and providers such as AFIGE teach entirely online.

Is a Spanish tax master's useful outside Spain?

Only in part. The programmes focus on Spanish taxes, although they include international taxation; advisers who want to work in another country need training in that country's tax system.
