Studies & Degrees in Sustainable Business Leadership

Sustainable business leadership is the study of how to run an organisation so that it stays profitable while accounting for its effects on people and the environment. It combines general management (strategy, finance, operations, people) with subjects that used to sit outside the business curriculum: environmental management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), the circular economy, carbon footprint and decarbonisation, business ethics, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting.

Two reference points explain why the subject has grown. The first is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN member states in 2015, with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The second is regulation. EU law requires companies above a certain size to disclose the risks and opportunities they see in social and environmental issues, and the impact of their activities on people and the environment. The first companies subject to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) applied the rules in the 2024 financial year. The scope is still being adjusted: in February 2025 the European Commission proposed limiting the directive to companies with more than 1,000 employees.

Qualifications and levels

The subject is taught mainly at postgraduate level. Bachelor's students usually meet it as courses or a specialisation within a business degree.

  • One-year master's degrees. The Master's Programme in Sustainable Management of Uppsala Universitet has 60 credits and runs from 31 August 2026 to 6 June 2027. It is taught in English, on campus in Visby, by the Department of Business and Society on Campus Gotland. The first semester has four courses that give a broad view of sustainability issues; the second covers research methods and ends with the master's thesis.
  • Two-year master's degrees. Lund University offers four master's programmes in environment and sustainability taught in English. One of them, Environmental Management and Policy, lasts two years and has 120 credits.
  • Online master's and MBA programmes. Cerem - Escuela Internacional de Negocios, in Madrid, offers a Máster en Sostenibilidad Empresarial y Gestión Medioambiental (12 months, 60 ECTS credits) and an MBA con Especialización en Sostenibilidad Empresarial (14 months, 72 ECTS credits), both fully online.
  • Leadership and executive programmes. Business schools also run shorter programmes for working managers. The Escuela Internacional de Gerencia (EIG), in Granada, lists a leadership programme, LIDERING, among its postgraduate courses.

In Spain, check which kind of qualification a programme awards. Official master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. A Máster de Formación Permanente also has 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits, but it is a university's own qualification. The Cerem master's leads to Cerem's private certificate and to a Máster de Formación Permanente of the Universidad Nebrija; the school states that these are own qualifications that do not lead to an official degree.

Admission, language and costs

A bachelor's degree is the usual entry requirement. Uppsala asks for a bachelor's degree from an internationally recognised university and proof of English, and selects applicants on their GMAT score and higher education credits; applicants with a GMAT score have priority. Cerem asks for a bachelor's degree in any field.

At Uppsala, students who are not citizens of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland pay a total tuition fee of SEK 114,000 for the programme.

One way to compare business schools on this subject is the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative. Its signatories are degree-granting institutions that have committed to its principles, and it counts more than 800 of them in 96 countries.

Where to study

SpainExchange lists six active schools for sustainable business leadership: two in Sweden, two in Spain, one in the United States and one in Australia. They are Uppsala Universitet and Lund University in Sweden; Cerem - Escuela Internacional de Negocios in Madrid and the Escuela Internacional de Gerencia (EIG) in Granada; the University of Southern Maine in Portland; and Griffith University on the Gold Coast. The Swedish programmes described here are taught in English and the Spanish ones in Spanish.

Careers

Uppsala reports that its graduates often take roles that involve analysing, coordinating or leading sustainability initiatives: ensuring organisational accountability, guiding strategy, or assessing the social and environmental effects of business activities. They work in private companies, non-profit organisations, consultancies and support agencies. Cerem names roles such as environmental management officer and ESG and CSR consultant.

General management posts are reached with experience. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, top executives typically need at least a bachelor's degree and considerable work experience, and their overall employment in the United States is projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035. There are no separate official figures for sustainability managers in that source.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a business degree to study sustainable business leadership?

Not necessarily. The Uppsala master's requires a bachelor's degree without naming a field, and Cerem states that no specific specialisation is required.

How long does a master's take?

One to two years. The Uppsala programme has 60 credits and takes one academic year; the Environmental Management and Policy master's at Lund takes two years and has 120 credits; the online Cerem master's takes 12 months.

Can I study it in English?

Yes. The Uppsala master's and the four Lund master's programmes in environment and sustainability are taught in English.

Is an online master's from a Spanish business school an official degree?

Not always. Many are a Máster de Formación Permanente or a school's own certificate. Check on the programme page whether the qualification is official before enrolling.
