Studies & Degrees in Dental Lab Technology

Dental laboratory technology is the craft and science of making the appliances that dentists prescribe: crowns, bridges, complete and partial dentures, orthodontic appliances, occlusal splints and the parts that sit on dental implants. The technician works from an impression or a digital scan of the patient's mouth and from the dentist's prescription. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental laboratory technicians work closely with dentists but have limited contact with patients.

Students learn dental anatomy and how the jaw moves, the properties of the materials (wax, alloy, ceramic, plastic and porcelain), and the bench techniques for each kind of appliance. Digital work is now part of the training: technicians use computer programs and three-dimensional printers to design and produce restorations. Programmes also cover running a laboratory, including records, stock, safety and the rules on waste.

Qualifications and levels

The route into the profession differs from country to country, and the title is regulated in some countries and not in others.

  • Spain. The official qualification is the higher vocational training (FP) diploma Técnico Superior en Prótesis Dentales, in the health family. It lasts 2,000 hours, which is two academic years, and its modules are assigned 120 ECTS credits. It includes a training phase in a company. Entry requires the Bachiller, an intermediate FP diploma (Técnico de Grado Medio) or a pass in the entrance test for higher FP. The modules cover complete dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed restorations, orthodontic appliances and occlusal splints, and prostheses on implants. The Spanish education ministry notes that the activity is regulated by the state health administration.
  • United Kingdom. Dental technicians register with the General Dental Council (GDC), which publishes the qualifications that lead to registration. The list includes the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Technology, foundation degrees in Dental Technology, a Diploma of Higher Education and BSc (Hons) degrees in Dental Technology. The GDC has separate guidance for people who qualified outside the UK.
  • United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that technicians typically need at least a high school diploma and that most learn through on-the-job training. Employers may prefer candidates with a postsecondary certificate or an associate's degree from a community college or technical school. Certification is optional. The Certified Dental Technician credential is run by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology, an independent board founded by the National Association of Dental Laboratories.
  • Mexico. The Universidad de Guadalajara teaches a Técnico Superior Universitario en Prótesis Dental, a short-cycle university programme, at its health sciences centre (CUCS).

After a first qualification, technicians often specialise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists orthodontic appliances, crowns and bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, implants and ceramics as common specialities.

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 10 active schools for dental lab technology: four in the United States, three in Spain and one each in the United Kingdom, Armenia and Mexico. Examples are the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico, West Thames College in Isleworth, west London, Yerevan State Medical University in Armenia and, in Spain, the online centres Neptunos Formación and Formación Universitaria.

Two points are worth checking before enrolling. The first is whether the programme leads to the qualification that the country requires for work: in Spain the official FP diploma, in the United Kingdom a qualification on the GDC list. A private or online course in dental prosthetics can be useful preparation or further training, but a centre's own certificate is not the official diploma. The second is the language. Programmes are taught in the language of the country, and a technician has to read prescriptions and technical documentation in that language.

Careers

Most dental technicians work in commercial dental laboratories. Others work in the laboratories of dental clinics and hospitals, or for manufacturers and distributors of dental materials and equipment. The Spanish ministry lists these roles for holders of the FP diploma: dental prosthetics technician, technical manager of a dental prosthetics laboratory, sales representative in the dental industry, and technical roles in product research and development. Graduates work as employees or set up on their own.

The United States had about 34,400 dental laboratory technicians in 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the wider group that also includes ophthalmic laboratory and medical appliance technicians, 61% work in medical equipment and supplies manufacturing. The Bureau projects employment in that group to decline 2 percent from 2025 to 2035, with openings coming from the need to replace workers who leave. With experience, technicians can become supervisors, and some go on to own their own laboratory.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to become a dental technician?

In Spain the official Técnico Superior en Prótesis Dentales programme lasts 2,000 hours over two academic years. In the United States there is no fixed length: most technicians learn on the job, and some first complete a certificate or associate's degree.

Do dental technicians treat patients?

Usually not. They make and repair appliances to a dentist's prescription, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes their contact with patients as limited.

Is the profession regulated?

It depends on the country. In the United Kingdom dental technicians register with the General Dental Council, and in Spain the activity is regulated by the state health administration. In the United States certification is optional.

Can I study dental lab technology online?

Some centres offer online courses on the theory. The work itself is manual and done in a laboratory, and the official Spanish diploma includes a training phase in a company, so check which qualification an online course leads to before enrolling.
