Studies & Degrees in International Business Management

International business management is the study of how companies operate across borders. It takes the core subjects of a business degree (strategy, finance, marketing, operations, people management) and looks at them in a setting where customers, suppliers, staff and regulators are in different countries. EAE Business School, for example, describes its master's in the field as centred on the international aspects of management that today's business world requires.

Typical topics are global strategy and the world economy, international trade and logistics, international finance and currency risk, marketing in foreign markets, and managing teams from different cultures. Many programmes add a foreign language, a study period abroad or a work placement. York St John University notes that changes in technology, the economy, politics and society all create issues that businesses must respond to, and that is the setting in which the subject is taught.

Qualifications and levels

  • Bachelor's degrees. In Spain an official bachelor's degree (grado) has 240 ECTS credits and takes four years. In England a bachelor's degree usually takes three years: the International Business BA (Hons) at York St John University lasts three years full time, or four with a placement year. ESEI International Business School in Barcelona runs a three-year bachelor in business management in which students study two years in Barcelona and complete the final year with a UK university.
  • Master's degrees. Spanish official master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. The Master in International Business of EAE Business School has 60 ECTS credits, is taught full time in Spanish or in English, and is offered in Barcelona and Madrid. The International Business MSc at York St John University takes one year full time, or two years with professional experience.
  • MBA and executive programmes. Business schools also offer MBAs with an international focus and shorter executive courses on international trade for people who already work. Many of these lead to the school's own qualification, so check whether a programme is an official degree.
  • Study abroad programmes. Short international business courses for visiting students combine classes with company visits in several cities.

Admission and language

A master's programme normally requires a first degree. EAE asks for a bachelor's degree and, to follow its programme properly, a minimum English level of C1. York St John asks for a 2:2 honours degree from a recognised institution for its MSc. Programmes are taught in the language of the country or in English, and several schools in Spain offer both.

Fees differ widely between public and private institutions and between countries. As a sourced example, York St John University lists international tuition of £12,100 per year for the bachelor's degree (2026 entry) and £11,800 for the full-time MSc (2026-27 academic year).

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 31 active schools for international business management. Spain has 11 and the United States seven. France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Mexico have two each, and Italy, Peru, Ecuador, Bulgaria and India one each.

In Spain the list includes ESEI International Business School, EAE Business School and Global Business School Barcelona in Barcelona, ESDEN Business School in Madrid, ENAE Business School in Murcia, the Escuela Internacional de Gerencia (EIG) in Granada, and universities such as the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, the Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera and the Universidad Católica de Ávila. Abroad it includes London Metropolitan University and York St John University in the United Kingdom, Northeastern University, Temple University and The Ohio State University in the United States, the Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft (FHDW) in Germany, the Universidad de Guadalajara and the Universidad de Sonora in Mexico, the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Peru and the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral in Ecuador.

When comparing programmes, look at the language of instruction, whether the degree is official or the school's own, whether a period abroad or a placement is part of the curriculum, and how international the student group is.

Careers

Graduates work in export and import departments, international sales and marketing, purchasing and supply chain, business development, consulting and the regional offices of multinational companies. EAE lists senior roles that its master's graduates aim for over time, such as global sales director, chief operating officer, business development director and strategy consultant. First jobs are usually junior posts in those same areas.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count international business graduates as one occupation. It projects overall employment in business and financial occupations to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035. For management analysts, who recommend ways to improve an organisation's efficiency, it projects growth of 10 percent over the same period. It notes that this occupation typically requires at least a bachelor's degree and several years of related work experience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between international business and business administration?

The core subjects are the same. An international business programme teaches them with a cross-border focus: trade, foreign markets, international finance and multicultural teams, often with languages or a period abroad.

How long does a degree in international business take?

An official bachelor's degree in Spain has 240 ECTS credits and takes four years, and a master's degree has 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. In England the International Business BA (Hons) at York St John University takes three years full time.

Can I study international business in English in Spain?

Yes. EAE Business School offers its Master in International Business in Spanish or in English, and ESEI International Business School in Barcelona teaches in English.

Do I need work experience for a master's in international business?

Not always. The entry requirement is normally a first degree, and each school sets its own rules. MBAs and executive programmes are the ones that usually expect professional experience.
