Studies & Degrees in Administration Technology Management
Administration technology management is a label that schools use for two related things. The first is the management of technology in an organisation: deciding which computer systems a company needs, buying and installing them and leading the people who run them. The second is office administration with technology: running the administrative side of a business (documents, accounts, records, communication) with digital tools. Both combine business subjects with information technology, and the difference is mostly one of level.
Students take courses in business administration, accounting, office software, databases and information systems, and communication. At higher levels they add project management, IT strategy and data analysis.
Qualifications and levels
- Vocational training in Spain. The official qualification is the Técnico Superior en Administración y Finanzas, a higher-level FP course of 2,000 hours. Students learn, among other things, to process documents and communications in a company's information circuits. Access is with the Bachillerato or an entrance test. Three schools listed on SpainExchange teach it: C.E.S Santa María de los Ángeles in Málaga offers it in dual form, state-funded under agreement with the Junta de Andalucía, over two academic years; CCC Centro de Estudios teaches it in person in Madrid over two years, with 500 hours of company placement and a start in September 2026; and the Centro de Formación Profesional Decroly in Santander lists two academic years, with a placement of at least 500 hours or, in the intensive scheme, 700 hours. A second official course in the same family, the Técnico Superior en Asistencia a la Dirección, also has 2,000 hours and trains management assistants.
- Associate degrees and certificates in the United States. Community colleges teach the subject as office administration and technology. Chemeketa Community College in Oregon has one-year certificates and two-year degrees, including an Administrative Office Professional Associate of Applied Science. At Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Alabama the business programme leads to an A.A.S. degree in four options for direct entry into the job market, and can also be a step towards a bachelor's degree.
- Bachelor's and master's degrees. For the management side, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says that computer and information systems managers typically need a bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology plus related work experience, and that some employers prefer a graduate degree. It adds that management information systems (MIS) programmes usually include business classes as well as computer-related ones. Business schools offer programmes on the same border between management and technology: C3S Business School in Barcelona, for example, lists a BA (Hons) in Business Analytics and Digital Transformation and a Master in Business Analytics & Data Science For Management.
Official Spanish university degrees have 240 ECTS credits (bachelor's degree, grado) and 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits (master's degree). Private business schools may award their own or a partner university's qualification, so ask the school which institution awards the degree and what recognition it has.
Where to study it
SpainExchange lists 14 active schools for this subject: eight in Spain, five in the United States and one in Ethiopia. The Spanish schools are vocational centres in Málaga, Madrid and Santander, business schools in Barcelona and Madrid (C3S Business School and the UIBS campuses) and distance providers such as the Fundación Universitaria Iberoamericana (FUNIBER). The American schools include Auburn University at Montgomery, Greenville Technical College, Chattahoochee Valley Community College, Chemeketa Community College and the Community College of Vermont. Addis Ababa University is the school listed in Ethiopia.
FP courses in Spain are taught in Spanish. C3S Business School publishes its programme list in English; confirm the teaching language with each business school.
Careers
The two levels lead to different jobs. Graduates of the Spanish FP course work, according to the official TodoFP portal, as office, commercial, financial or accounting administrative staff. In the United States, the BLS describes secretaries and administrative assistants as the staff who arrange files, prepare documents, schedule appointments and support other staff. It counted 3,515,600 such jobs in 2025 and projects a decline of 2 percent from 2025 to 2035.
On the management side, IT managers plan, coordinate and direct computer-related activities in an organisation, under titles such as chief information officer (CIO), chief technology officer (CTO) or MIS director. The BLS counted 685,800 jobs in 2025 and projects growth of 16 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average. These posts normally come after several years of work experience.
Frequently asked questions
Is this subject about computing or about business?
Both. Programmes mix business administration with information technology; vocational courses lean towards office and accounting work with digital tools, and university programmes towards managing information systems.
How long does the Spanish FP course in Administración y Finanzas take?
It has 2,000 hours, which the schools cited here spread over two academic years, including a company placement.
Can I become an IT manager straight after graduating?
Usually not. The BLS states that these managers typically need a bachelor's degree plus related work experience.
Can an associate degree lead to a bachelor's degree?
It can. Chattahoochee Valley Community College, for example, describes its A.A.S. degree as a possible step towards completing a bachelor's degree. Ask the receiving university which credits it accepts.
