Studies & Degrees in Industrial Management and Organization
Industrial management and organization is the study of how factories and other operations are planned, run and improved. It sits between engineering and business: students learn enough technology to understand a production process and enough management to organise the people, materials, money and information that the process needs. Depending on the country, the same field is taught as industrial engineering, industrial organization engineering, operations management or industrial management.
The Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University quotes the definition of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers: the discipline is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment and energy. Purdue sums it up as an education in both engineering and business.
What students learn
The study plan of the Grado en Ingeniería en Organización Industrial at Tecnun, the engineering school of the Universidad de Navarra, shows the usual mix. It has a basic module of 68 ECTS credits (physics, chemistry, mathematics, economics and technical drawing), a module of industrial technologies of 44 ECTS credits and a module of quantitative methods of 32 ECTS credits, which includes operations management and production planning. Information systems, data analysis and people management complete the plan.
In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that bachelor's programmes in industrial engineering include coursework in statistics, production systems planning and manufacturing systems design.
Qualifications and levels
- Bachelor's degree in Spain (grado). Official bachelor's degrees have 240 ECTS credits and take four years. At Tecnun the degree is taught in San Sebastián in Spanish and English, with 90 places, and the first year can be taken entirely in English. The Universitat Politècnica de València teaches a Grado en Ingeniería de Organización Industrial of four years and 240 credits on its València campus, with 80 places and a public price of €17.34 per credit in 2026-27; the university states that it holds the EUR-ACE label.
- Master's degrees in Spain. Official master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. The Máster Universitario en Ingeniería Industrial of the Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Comillas ICAI) lasts two years (120 ECTS credits), is taught in English and Spanish, and gives access to the regulated profession of Ingeniero Industrial. Graduates in industrial organization engineering may need bridging courses first: the Universitat Politècnica de València says that its graduates must complete additional training before entering that master's degree.
- United States. According to the BLS, industrial production managers typically need a bachelor's degree and several years of related work experience; common majors include business and engineering. Some employers prefer a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a graduate degree in industrial management.
Community and technical colleges also teach shorter programmes in manufacturing and industrial technology. Ask each school which qualification its programme leads to and what recognition it has.
Where to study
SpainExchange lists 19 active schools for industrial management and organization. Eleven are in the United States and four in Spain; Argentina, Indonesia, Iraq and Russia have one each. In the United States the list includes Purdue University, Tennessee Tech University and West Virginia University. In Spain it includes the Universidad de Navarra, the Universidad Pontificia Comillas and the Universidad Camilo José Cela. Elsewhere it includes the Universidad Nacional de San Luis in Argentina, Petra Christian University in Surabaya and the University of Mosul.
Programmes in the United States are taught in English. In Spain the main language is Spanish, and some schools teach part of the degree in English. Check the language of instruction of each programme before applying.
Careers
Graduates work in production, operations, logistics, purchasing and quality control. The Universitat Politècnica de València describes posts with responsibility for people and teams in the operations, production or quality control areas of industrial companies; Tecnun mentions production and logistics.
The BLS describes industrial production managers as the people who coordinate, plan and direct the activities involved in creating goods such as cars, computer equipment and paper products, and who ensure that production stays on schedule and within budget. They held about 252,100 jobs in the United States in 2025, and the BLS projects their employment to grow 3 percent from 2025 to 2035. For industrial engineers it projects growth of 12 percent over the same period. Management posts usually come after some years of experience: the BLS notes that some managers begin as production workers and move up through the ranks.
Frequently asked questions
Is industrial management an engineering degree or a business degree?
It combines both. In Spain it is taught as an engineering degree (Ingeniería en Organización Industrial) with modules in technology, quantitative methods and management. In the United States it is found in engineering schools and in business programmes.
How long does a degree in industrial management and organization take?
An official bachelor's degree in Spain has 240 ECTS credits and takes four years. An official master's degree adds 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits.
Can I study industrial organization engineering in English in Spain?
Partly. At Tecnun (Universidad de Navarra) the degree is taught in Spanish and English and the first year can be taken entirely in English. Most other programmes in Spain are taught mainly in Spanish.
Do I need a master's degree to work as a production manager?
Not always. According to the BLS, industrial production managers in the United States typically need a bachelor's degree and several years of related work experience, and some employers prefer an MBA or a graduate degree in industrial management.
