Studies & Degrees in Fashion and Design Management
Fashion and Design Management Study Programs
Fashion and design management is the business side of the fashion, luxury and design industries. A designer decides what a collection looks like. A manager decides which products are made, in what quantities, at what price, through which shops and channels, and how the brand is presented. Programmes in this field teach general management and apply it to companies that sell creative products: clothing, accessories, furniture, cosmetics and other goods where image and brand matter as much as function.
Students learn marketing and brand management, buying and merchandising, retail and e-commerce, supply chains, finance for product-based companies, and the way collections are planned through the season. Most programmes add project work with companies and an internship. Sustainability has become a regular part of the syllabus, and some schools offer whole programmes on it, such as the Sustainable Fashion Management MBA listed by IFA Paris.
Qualifications and levels
- Bachelor's degrees. Programme names vary: fashion management, fashion marketing, fashion business or fashion brand management. Richmond American University London offers a BA (Hons) Fashion Management and Marketing that takes three or four years and is described by the university as a UK and US degree. In Paris, IFA Paris and MOD'SPE Paris both list a Bachelor Fashion Marketing. In Italy, Accademia del Lusso lists a three-year programme in Fashion Brand Management.
- Design degrees with a business component. In Spain, the official higher arts studies in design have 240 credits over four academic years and four specialities: graphic, product, interior and fashion design. Private schools such as IED Madrid, the Centro Superior de Diseño Hacer Creativo in Zaragoza and the Escuela de Diseño CEADE Leonardo in Seville list degrees in fashion design, and IED Madrid also has a study area for strategy, marketing and communication. Marbella Design Academy teaches a validated BA (Hons) in Fashion Design & Development.
- Master's degrees. Graduates of any discipline can move into the field with a specialised master's. The Master in Fashion, Experience & Design Management (MAFED) of SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan is a one-year, full-time programme taught in English with 70 ECTS credits. It asks for a degree certificate in any discipline, work experience and proficiency in English. Accademia del Lusso lists master's programmes in Fashion Brand Management and Luxury Management, and MOD'SPE Paris an MBA Fashion Brand Management. In Spain, official master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits.
- Short courses and diplomas. Fashion schools also offer shorter specialisation diplomas, for example the diploma in styling and fashion communication at CEADE Leonardo.
Titles such as "bachelor", "master" and "MBA" do not mean the same in every country, and many fashion schools award their own qualifications. Ask each school whether the qualification is recognised by the state or validated by a university, and how many ECTS credits it has.
Where to study
SpainExchange lists 34 active schools for this subject. Spain has the most, with 11, followed by the United States with 6 and the United Kingdom with 3. Italy, France, New Zealand, Brazil and Japan have two each, and there are single schools in Canada, Singapore, Mexico and Belarus.
The Spanish schools include several in Madrid and Barcelona, and others in Seville, Zaragoza and the province of Málaga. Examples are IED Madrid, LCI Barcelona, the Universitat Ramon Llull and the Escuela Internacional de Diseño y Moda ISA. Milan and Paris, two of the traditional fashion capitals, are represented by Bocconi University and Accademia del Lusso, and by IFA Paris and MOD'SPE Paris. In the United Kingdom the list includes Manchester Metropolitan University and Richmond American University London.
The language of instruction depends on the school. The Spanish design schools teach mainly in Spanish. SDA Bocconi's MAFED is taught in English, and IFA Paris states that its programmes are fully taught in French or in English.
Careers
Graduates work for fashion and luxury brands, retailers, online shops, design companies and agencies. Typical first jobs are assistant buyer, merchandiser, product manager, brand or marketing assistant, retail manager, visual merchandiser and fashion communication or public relations officer. Some graduates start their own label or shop. SDA Bocconi describes its master's as aimed at people who want a managerial role in a fashion, luxury or design company.
There are no official statistics for fashion managers as a single occupation. For the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects little or no change in the employment of fashion designers from 2025 to 2035, while the job outlook for advertising, promotions and marketing managers in all industries is growth of 6 percent in the same period. The business roles in fashion follow the second group more closely than the first.
