Studies & Degrees in Sports and Fitness Management

Sports and Fitness Management Study Programs

Level: Undergraduate Bachelors     Location: Villanueva de la Cañada

Sports and fitness management is the business side of sport and physical activity. It deals with how clubs, gyms, leisure centres, federations, events and sports facilities are organised, financed, staffed and promoted. Students combine general management subjects with knowledge of the sport sector, so the field sits between a business degree and a sport science degree.

Typical subjects are accounting and finance, marketing and sponsorship, sports law and risk management, human resources, facility operations, event management and leadership. Many programmes add coaching, adapted sport or exercise science, and most include an internship in a club, federation or sports centre. Camosun College in Canada, for example, lists accounting, law, marketing, adapted sport and physical activity, coaching, facility operations and event management among the topics of its second year.

Qualifications and levels

The subject is taught at every level, from short vocational courses to doctorates.

  • Vocational training in Spain. Two higher vocational training (FP) qualifications of 2,000 hours in the physical and sports activities family include management tasks. Técnico Superior en Acondicionamiento Físico trains students to set up and supervise fitness programmes and events and leads to jobs such as coordinator of fitness activities. Técnico Superior en Enseñanza y Animación Sociodeportiva covers the management of sports and recreation projects and leads to jobs such as coordinator of sports activities in the facilities of tourism companies or public and private bodies.
  • Bachelor's degrees. Official Spanish bachelor's degrees (grados) have 240 ECTS credits. Abroad, a bachelor's degree in sport management usually takes three or four years. The Bachelor of Sport Management at Camosun College lasts four years, starts in September, January or May and is open to international students; students who complete the first two years can leave with a Diploma in Sport Management. Troy University in the United States teaches sport management within its Bachelor of Science in Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management, on campus or online, with courses such as Sport Economics and Finance. The university states that the programme is accredited by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).
  • Master's degrees and doctorates. Official Spanish master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. Troy University offers a master's degree in sport management with thesis and non-thesis options, the latter also online, and electives such as Sport and the Law and Risk Management in Sport, as well as a PhD in sport management in an online and hybrid format. Tennessee Tech University has an online Master of Arts in Exercise Science with a concentration in Sport Management that includes facility management and an internship.
  • Short courses. Private training centres teach fitness instructor and personal trainer courses. CIM Formación, for example, lists a personal trainer course at its Valencia centre with 300 hours of training, 100 in class and 200 of work placement in sports centres, and states that it gives access to the EQF level 4 accreditation of EuropeActive. Courses of this kind prepare for work on the gym floor rather than for management, and students should ask the school what recognition the certificate has.

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 11 active schools for sports and fitness management. Four are in the United States, three in the United Kingdom, two in Spain, and one each in Australia and Canada. The list includes Troy University, Tennessee Tech University, City College at MSU Billings and the State University of New York (SUNY) in the United States; London Metropolitan University, the University of Kent and the University of Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom; Camosun College in Victoria, Canada; Charles Sturt University in Australia; and CCC Centro de Estudios and CIM Formación in Spain.

Programmes in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are taught in English, and the two Spanish centres teach in Spanish. Course offers change from year to year, so check on each school's own site which sport or fitness programmes it currently runs.

Careers

Graduates work for sports clubs and federations, gym and fitness chains, municipal sports services, leisure and tourism companies, event organisers and sports marketing agencies. Typical jobs are sports centre or gym manager, activities coordinator, event coordinator, club administrator and sponsorship or marketing officer. Some graduates represent athletes: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes agents and business managers as people who represent and promote athletes in dealings with current or prospective employers.

The fitness sector is a large employer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fitness trainers and instructors held about 388,400 jobs in the United States in 2025, 55 percent of them in fitness and recreational sports centres. Employment is projected to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 68,000 openings a year. These workers typically need a high school diploma, but employers may prefer candidates with an associate's or bachelor's degree.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sport management and sport science?

Sport science studies the body and performance: physiology, biomechanics, training. Sport management studies the organisations around sport: finance, marketing, law, facilities and events. Many programmes combine some of both.

Can I study sport management online?

Yes. Troy University offers its bachelor's programme online or in person and the non-thesis option of its master's degree through TROY Online, and Tennessee Tech University teaches its sport management concentration online.

Do I need a degree to work in a gym?

Not always. In the United States, fitness trainers and instructors typically need a high school diploma, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, although employers may prefer a degree. In Spain, the 2,000-hour FP qualification in Acondicionamiento Físico is the vocational route into the sector.
