Studies & Degrees in Technical Engineering in Management Computing
Technical Engineering in Management Computing is the English rendering of Ingeniería Técnica en Informática de Gestión, a Spanish title from before the European Higher Education Area. It trained computing professionals for the information systems of companies and public bodies. The degree that covers this field today is the bachelor's degree (grado) in Computer Engineering, the Grado en Ingeniería Informática, often with a specialisation in information systems.
Management computing links software and business. The Spanish Council of Universities describes the information systems profile as the ability to integrate information and communication technology with business processes to meet the information needs of organisations, and to act as a link between the technical and the management sides of an organisation. Students learn programming, databases, software engineering, networks and operating systems, together with how organisations work.
Qualifications and levels
- Bachelor's degree (grado). The Council of Universities' recommendations for degrees linked to the profession of Ingeniero Técnico en Informática, published in 2009, set a study plan of 240 ECTS credits: 60 of basic training, 60 common to the computing branch, a block of 48 in a specific technology and a final degree project of 12. The Universidad de Alcalá (UAH) states that its degree follows this agreement.
- Specific technologies. The recommendations define five: software engineering, computer engineering, computing, information systems and information technologies. The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) offers the same five profiles in its degree. Information systems is the one closest to the old management computing title.
- Length. The degree takes four years at the Universidad de Murcia (UM), at UAH and at La Salle Campus Barcelona, part of the Universitat Ramon Llull.
- Holders of the old title. Royal Decree 822/2021 states that official titles from before the current system keep all their academic and, where applicable, professional effects. Holders of an Ingeniero Técnico title who want a grado can ask the university for recognition of credits.
- Master's and doctorate. Official master's degrees in Spain have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits and lead on to the doctorate.
Admission and language
The Universidad de La Laguna (ULL) does not require specific prior knowledge, but says that students from a science and technology track, with mathematics, physics and English, are better prepared. Students with school qualifications from other education systems normally obtain an accreditation through UNEDasiss and then apply to each university within its own deadlines.
Languages and formats vary. UM teaches on campus in Spanish, with 240 first-year places. UAH lists Castilian and English, with some subjects in English and 75 places. La Salle lists Catalan, Castilian and English and 40 places. UOC teaches the degree online. Graduates with a foreign computing degree who need it recognised in Spain can apply for a declaration of equivalence under Royal Decree 889/2022.
Where to study it
The SpainExchange directory lists 14 schools for this subject, all of them in Spain. They include UOC and the Universitat Ramon Llull in Barcelona, UM in Murcia, UAH in Alcalá de Henares, ULL on Tenerife, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the Universidad de Vigo, the Universidad de Valladolid, the Universidad de Extremadura, the Universitat Jaume I, the Universidad de Jaén and the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca.
When comparing schools, check which specific technologies each degree offers, whether information systems is among them, the language of instruction, and whether you want campus or online study.
Careers
ULL lists the main areas where its graduates work: management of computing projects and installations, analysis and programming of web applications, maintenance of applications and information systems, administration of networks and databases, systems analysis, technical consultancy and audits.
The closest occupation in US statistics is the computer systems analyst, who studies an organisation's current computer systems and procedures and designs improvements to them. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 544,400 of them in 2025 and projects employment to grow 8 per cent from 2025 to 2035. The largest employers are computer systems design services, finance and insurance, and company management. The same source notes that business courses or a major in management information systems may be helpful.
