Studies & Degrees in Retail

Retail is the business of selling goods and services directly to the people who use them, in shops, online or through both channels at once. As a subject it covers how a retailer chooses and buys its products, sets prices, manages stock and supply, presents goods in store and on screen, and looks after customers. It is an applied business subject: students learn marketing, finance and logistics through the specific problems of running shops and e-commerce operations.

Typical course content includes store operations, consumer behaviour, buying and merchandising, visual merchandising, distribution and logistics, retail analytics and digital marketing. Many degrees include a work placement or an internship with a retailer.

Qualifications and levels

A job on the shop floor does not usually require a qualification. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that retail sales workers typically do not need formal education to enter the occupation and that most are trained on the job, usually over a few days to a few months. Study matters for those who want to manage a store, become a buyer or merchandiser, or run their own shop.

  • Vocational training. In Spain the official title is Técnico en Actividades Comerciales, an intermediate vocational training (FP grado medio) programme of 2,000 hours in the Comercio y Marketing family. Access requires the Spanish compulsory secondary education certificate or a higher qualification. Students learn to run a small retail business, sell through different channels and carry out e-commerce tasks. In the United States, two-year community colleges offer associate degrees and certificates in business and retail fields.
  • Bachelor's degrees. The University of Stirling in Scotland offers a BA (Hons) in Retail Marketing that lasts 48 months full time on campus. It covers store operations, marketing, distribution, logistics and consumer behaviour, with modules in digital marketing, analytics and e-commerce, and ends with a dissertation. Typical entry to the four-year route is BBB at A-level or 28 points in the IB Diploma. Purdue University has a retail management major that includes merchandising, buying, planning and control, multi-channel retailing and retail analytics, with a supervised retail internship or field experience. The Ohio State University awards a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology in Fashion and Retail Studies, with a merchandising track and a product development track.
  • Master's degrees. At Ohio State, students can complete a master's degree in Fashion and Retail Studies in one year after the bachelor's degree. Elsewhere, retail is often a specialisation inside a master's in marketing, management or fashion business.

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 27 active schools for retail. Fifteen are in the United States and seven in the United Kingdom; Italy, Ireland, Australia, Zimbabwe and Spain have one each. The US list includes large public universities such as The Ohio State University, Purdue University, The University of Texas at Austin, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Texas Tech University, and community colleges such as Northeast Community College and Bucks County Community College. In the United Kingdom it includes the University of Stirling, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Surrey, the University of Brighton and London Metropolitan University. Technological University Dublin is the school in Ireland and ESCI-UPF in Barcelona the one in Spain.

Most of these programmes are taught in English. When comparing them, look at how much of the course is specifically about retail rather than general business or fashion, whether a placement is part of the degree, and which companies take students for internships. Some degrees allow a period elsewhere: Purdue students who qualify can spend their third year at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and earn an associate degree alongside the Purdue bachelor's degree.

Careers

Graduates work for store chains, online retailers, brands and wholesalers. Purdue lists career paths that include buyer, merchandiser, store manager, e-commerce manager, visual merchandiser, sales manager and supply chain manager. The Spanish vocational title leads to jobs such as shopkeeper, manager of a small shop and stock and warehouse technician.

Retail is a very large employer, but shop-floor employment is not growing. Retail salespersons held about 4.0 million jobs in the United States in 2025. The BLS projects little or no change in employment of retail sales workers from 2025 to 2035, because the growth of online sales limits the number of physical stores; it still expects about 550,600 openings each year, mostly to replace workers who leave. For buyers and purchasing agents, who typically need a bachelor's degree, the BLS projects employment growth of 6 percent over the same period.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree to work in retail?

Not for sales jobs: according to the BLS, retail sales workers typically need no formal education and learn on the job. Buyers and purchasing agents typically need a bachelor's degree for entry-level positions.

How long does a retail degree take?

It depends on the country and the level. The BA (Hons) in Retail Marketing at the University of Stirling lasts 48 months, and the Spanish vocational programme Técnico en Actividades Comerciales has 2,000 hours.

Is retail the same as fashion?

No. Retail covers every kind of product, but several degrees combine the two. Ohio State's Fashion and Retail Studies degree, for example, teaches merchandising, product development, manufacturing and the management of retail operations.

Does a retail degree cover e-commerce?

Usually, yes. Stirling's degree has modules in digital marketing, analytics and e-commerce, and Purdue's major covers multi-channel retailing and retail analytics.
