What is the difference between Respondus LockDown Browser and LockDown Browser?

Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) is the core application that locks down a computer for an exam, preventing printing, new tabs, or other apps, while Respondus Monitor is a companion feature that uses a student's webcam/mic within LDB to record them for automated proctoring in remote settings, with LDB being essential for Monitor to function. Think of LDB as the locked room and Monitor as the virtual security camera inside, so you can't have Monitor without LDB, but you can use LDB alone for exams in physical testing centers.

Are Respondus LockDown Browser and LockDown Browser the same?

Respondus LockDown Browser, which is not a proctoring solution but limits what a student can do when taking an exam. It only requires using the LockDown Browser software. Respondus Monitor provides the same protections as LockDown Browser, but also allows for students to be recorded via webcam during the exam.

What do professors see on Respondus LockDown Browser?

If students were required to use the webcam feature (Respondus Monitor) with the quiz, instructors can access information about the quiz sessions and can review the recorded videos. Note that Respondus Monitor is intended to be a deterrent, so it's up to the instructor to determine the level of review warranted.

Does Respondus secretly record you?

Respondus Monitor uses webcam videos, screen recordings, and other data from the computing device and online exam to analyze a Student's exam session. The recordings and other information from the exam session are processed automatically and summary information is provided to the Instructor.

Does Respondus actually track eye movement?

Does Respondus Track Eye Movement? As you use the Respondus LockDown Browser, it will track your eye movements. Before beginning the exam or test session, students must have their camera set up so that it captures their entire face, eyes, and all.

What causes Respondus to flag?

Amongst its features, Respondus Monitor uses face detection technology to determine if an examinee's face is present in the video frame. If an examinee's face cannot be detected for a certain amount of time, the proctoring results show a flag for that segment of the video.

Does Respondus LockDown Browser know if you use your phone?

LockDown Browser will not catch students using multiple computers or cell phones.

How do I know if I'm being recorded on the LockDown Browser?

Once the exam begins, a "Recording" icon will appear at the top right of the screen. Don't attempt to exit the exam until you're finished. Additionally, you won't be able to print, copy, access other applications, or go to other websites during the exam.

Can LockDown Browser hear you without webcam?

LockDown Browser® itself does not access or record audio. However, when used with other proctoring tools and if the instructor enables audio recording, it can capture ambient sound via the microphone during an exam.

Can Respondus LockDown Browser detect a second Monitor?

Respondus LockDown Browser is intentionally designed not to support multiple monitors. It disables secondary displays to prevent cheating by restricting access to other resources. However, you can still use it on your larger monitor by making sure it's set as your primary display.

Can my teacher see me on the LockDown Browser?

Yes, teachers can see you on Lockdown Browser, especially if the instructor uses Respondus Monitor, which uses your webcam to record and flag suspicious activity (like looking away, other people entering the room, or accessing other apps) for review, or through Live Proctoring, where they watch you in real-time via video conferencing (Zoom, Teams). While LockDown Browser alone locks your computer, the combined Monitor feature provides the video surveillance. 

What does it look like when the LockDown Browser is recording?

If a student's activities must be recorded to avoid exam dishonesty, a lockdown browser can record the student, and you will see a recording icon on your screen. The recording will start immediately after the instructor sends you the download link, and the recorded exam will begin on the Lockdown Browser.

Can proctored exams detect two monitors?

Multiple monitors/displays are not supported. If you have more than one monitor, you will need to disconnect all but one.

What are the disadvantages of Respondus LockDown Browser?

The Respondus LockDown Browser has several limitations. It only supports Windows and macOS, requiring students to download and test it beforehand. Many classrooms lack enough power outlets, so students need to manage battery consumption during quizzes.

What happens if you get caught cheating in Respondus?

There are two reasons that Respondus Monitor is such a strong deterrent to cheating. First, a student knows they might get kicked out of the university if they are caught cheating. It's a pretty stiff penalty. Secondly, students know they can get caught long after the exam was actually administered.

What does the LockDown Browser detect?

LockDown Browser also blocks hundreds of common and advanced methods of digital cheating, such as the use of Virtual Machines, remote desktops, screensharing, instant messaging, screen recording, keystroke combinations, launching applications with timers/alerts, browser cache exploits and much more.

Does Respondus record you or just your screen?

Does Respondus LockDown Browser look at your eyes?

LockDown Browser will not damage a computer and does not run in any capacity when closed. It does not slow a computer down, nor does it install any tracking software (head and eye tracking is done by Respondus on their servers and only while Monitor is running).

Can LockDown Browser record your room?

YES, the LockDown Browser does record the user.

Who watches you on Respondus LockDown Browser?

Does Respondus LockDown always have a camera?

If you are required to use Respondus LockDown Browser with Respondus Monitor, you will need to take your test with a webcam. This will record you during your online, nonproctored exam. The webcam feature is what is referred to as “Respondus Monitor.” Your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone.

Does Respondus know if you switch tabs?

Proctored Tests: In some tests, you use a program called Respondus monitor. It lets Blackboard or Canvas know if you swap between tabs. This could make the program take you back to the test page.

How strict is the LockDown Browser?

Students are unable to open any browser other than the LockDown browser on the device they are using. This disallows them from searching for answers online while taking the exam. Also, students are not allowed to open other applications unless the professor specifically and selectable permits them to.

What does Respondus flag as suspicious?

Automated Video Analysis will automatically flag suspicious behavior during an exam. For example, if a student leaves the computer for a bit, or if a different person appears in the webcam recording during an exam, it will get flagged for the instructor.
