Alma College is a liberal arts college in Alma, in the centre of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, about one hour north of Lansing. It has been educating students since 1886 and has been continuously accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1916. In fall 2026 it had 1,197 undergraduate and 36 graduate students from 22 US states and 13 countries, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1. In U.S. News & World Report's 2027 rankings, according to the college, it tied for No. 1 in Undergraduate Teaching among Regional Colleges in the Midwest.

The college offers more than 45 programmes of study, with residential undergraduate degrees and low-residency and online graduate degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Bachelor of Music
  • Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
  • Master of Arts in Special Education

International students can apply free of charge with the Alma application or the Common Application, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. International Student Services and Career Services help with CPT and OPT work authorisation, and the college lists scholarships for international students. Alma, known as "Scotland, U.S.A.", holds an annual Highland Festival, and the college has 22 NCAA Division III sports programmes.

Admission Requirements

International applicants use the free Alma College application or the Common Application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and decisions are usually given within two weeks. Required:

  • Official secondary school transcripts in English, sent directly by the school (transfer students: all college transcripts)
  • International Student Affidavit of Support showing sufficient funds for F-1 or J-1 students
  • Proof of English proficiency (see language requirements)
  • Course syllabi if transfer credit is requested

Admitted students receive a Form I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1), pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and apply for a visa at a US embassy or consulate.

Language Requirements

Non-native English speakers must prove English proficiency (citizens of English-test-exempt countries are exempt; scores older than two years are not accepted). Minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT 79; IELTS 6.5; PTE Academic 56; Michigan English Test 57; Duolingo 110; iTEP Academic 4.5
  • Or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 520 / ACT English 21
  • Or three A-level or three IB Higher Level subjects, or ELS level 112

A waiver is possible for graduates of an English-only international high school.
