Ferris State University is a mid-sized, four-year public university whose main campus is in Big Rapids, Michigan. It was founded in 1884 by Woodbridge and Helen Ferris as the privately owned Big Rapids Industrial School, became a state institution in 1950 and a state university in 1987. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and states that it has more than 9,900 students.
Ferris offers more than 180 degree programmes, from associate to doctoral level, through seven colleges:
- College of Arts, Sciences and Education
- College of Business
- College of Engineering Technology
- College of Health Professions
- Kendall College of Art and Design (KCAD)
- Michigan College of Optometry
- College of Pharmacy
Most degree programmes include a required internship. Over 25 graduate programmes and certificates are taught on the main campus, at statewide locations or online, and doctoral degrees include Pharmacy, Optometry, Nursing Practice and Community College Leadership. Besides Big Rapids, the university has student hubs in Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Traverse City, and it reports that more students transfer to Ferris than to any other university in Michigan. Students can live in residence halls, apartments or suites, including a new residence hall for first-year students. The campus is also home to the Jim Crow Museum, with more than 30,000 artifacts. Tuition for the 2026-27 academic year (effective fall 2026); undergraduate yearly figures assume 14 credit hours per semester:
- Undergraduate, first and second year: US$14,952 per year (US$534 per credit hour) for US and Canadian residents; US$24,416 per year (US$872 per credit hour) for international students
- Undergraduate, third and fourth year: US$16,296 per year (US$582 per credit hour) and US$25,984 per year (US$928 per credit hour)
- Graduate: US$817 per credit hour, or US$1,222 per credit hour for international students
- Pharmacy US$1,039, Optometry US$1,008 and other doctoral programmes US$915 per credit hour
Studio programmes (art and design) have higher rates.
