Boston College (BC) is a private Jesuit, Catholic university in Chestnut Hill, a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1863 in Boston's South End, it was the first institution of higher education to operate in the city of Boston. BC has 9,677 undergraduates from all 50 US states and 81 countries, including about 750 international undergraduates (around 8%), and 5,150 graduate students. Nearly 80% of undergraduates live on campus in one of 35 residence halls.

Undergraduates choose from more than 50 majors in four undergraduate divisions:

  • Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences
  • Carroll School of Management
  • Lynch School of Education and Human Development
  • Connell School of Nursing

BC also has a law school, a school of social work, a school of theology and ministry, the non-residential Woods College of Advancing Studies and Messina College, a two-year residential college. International applicants submit the same credentials as other applicants plus a TOEFL iBT, IELTS or Duolingo English Test score; standardised tests are otherwise optional. BC does not offer need-based financial aid to students who are not US citizens or permanent residents, so international students must show they can pay the full cost before receiving the I-20.

Admission Requirements

International applicants (non-US citizens and non-permanent residents) submit the same credentials as other first-year or transfer applicants, with a few exceptions. Standardised tests (SAT/ACT) are optional for first-year applicants, but English proficiency exams are required unless waived. An InitialView video interview is encouraged but not required. After admission, international students complete the Certification of Finances form; the I-20 is only sent once they show they can meet the full cost of study.

Language Requirements

Non-US citizens must submit TOEFL iBT (test centre or Home Edition), IELTS or Duolingo English Test scores; scores are not superscored. Recommended minimums: IELTS 7.5, Duolingo 130, TOEFL iBT 100 (5.0 on the new scale). The requirement can be waived for native English speakers, students who attended a US or other majority English-speaking high school for at least three years without ESOL courses, or those with SAT EBRW 650+ or ACT English 29+.

Financial Aid

Boston College does not provide need-based financial aid to students who are not US citizens or US permanent residents, so international students should be prepared to pay the full cost of their education. The only academic merit award is the Presidential Scholarship, which covers full tuition for 18 applicants a year and needs no separate application.

Housing

Nearly 80% of undergraduates live on campus in one of 35 residence halls. All first-year students live on Upper Campus in Chestnut Hill or on Newton Campus, which has its own dining hall and library and is a short shuttle ride away. Eight Living and Learning Communities group students with shared interests, and there are 15 dining halls, cafés and markets with three meal plans.
