Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is a public research university in Bowling Green, Ohio. It was founded by the state in 1910 as a teacher-training institution and today has two campuses with 107 buildings, more than 800 full-time faculty members and more than US$20 million in research grants each year.
BGSU offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and programmes, as well as graduate and online programmes. Its colleges cover arts and sciences, business (Schmidthorst College of Business), education and human development, engineering and innovation, health and human services and musical arts, and there is an Honors College. Nine pre-professional tracks prepare students for medicine, law, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and other professional schools.
According to the university, more than 750 international students from 77 countries study at BGSU, supported by an international admissions office and student ambassadors. International undergraduates are automatically considered for academic scholarships, and the Falcon Tuition Guarantee keeps tuition, housing and meal costs fixed for four years. Examples include aviation studies and tourism, hospitality and event management. Pre-professional tracks prepare for dentistry, law, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and other fields.
International first-year applicants need a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale). With the online application they submit official transcripts from secondary school and any post-secondary study, plus English test scores or proof of English proficiency; SAT/ACT scores are needed only for merit scholarships. All documents must be official and in English (originals, notarised copies or official translations). To be considered for scholarships, apply by 20 June 2026 for Fall 2026 or by 7 November 2026 for Spring 2027. Admitted students must prove sufficient funds for their studies.
Undergraduate applicants show English proficiency with one of the following minimum results:
- TOEFL iBT 71 (tests in 2025 and before) or 4 (2026 onwards); MyBest scores are not accepted
- IELTS 6.0
- PTE Academic 48
- Duolingo English Test 100
- ELS Intensive English for Academic Purposes, Level 112
At least one academic year at a school or institution that teaches in English also counts.
Estimated annual costs for international students entering in 2026-27 (subject to change):
- Undergraduate (12 credits): tuition and fees US$23,500; room and meals US$12,500; insurance and books US$3,500; total US$39,500
- Graduate: tuition and fees US$22,000; room and meals US$11,000; insurance and books US$3,500; total US$36,500
The Falcon Tuition Guarantee fixes undergraduate costs for four academic years.
International undergraduates are automatically considered for academic scholarships when they apply, with no separate application:
- BG Success Scholarship: US$4,000 per year for international first-year and transfer students with a GPA of at least 3.0, renewable for four years
- Freshman Academic Scholarship: US$1,000 to US$8,000 per year, based on GPA and TOEFL/IELTS or SAT/ACT scores
International graduate students can receive graduate assistantships and other awards, decided by their academic department.
BGSU requires students to live on campus for their first two years, in residence halls, and all on-campus residents must have a meal plan. Housing and meal plan rates are locked in for the first two years.
