Cal State LA is a comprehensive public university in the heart of Los Angeles, founded in 1947, with about 22,000 students and a Downtown Campus in addition to its main site. It is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving, Minority-Serving and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution, and the university states that it is ranked number one in the United States for the upward mobility of its graduates.
It offers 100 undergraduate programmes, more than 100 graduate-level master's, certificate and credential programmes and four doctoral programmes, covering fields from business and the arts to education, engineering, science and nursing. More than 60 undergraduate and graduate programmes in seven colleges are presented to international students. Students can join more than 100 student organisations.
International applicants need an F-1 visa and apply through Cal State Apply. First-time freshman admission is offered for the fall term only; for Fall 2027 the international freshman filing period runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Graduates of foreign high schools need a 3.00 GPA in a college-preparatory programme and, if not taught entirely in English, an English test such as TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo. Applicants who meet the CSU minimum requirements are admitted, except for a few competitive programmes such as Pre-Nursing and Music BM.

Admission
International freshmen (F-1 visa) are admitted for the fall term only. Requirements for graduates of foreign high schools:
- A college-preparatory secondary programme equivalent to a US college-prep curriculum
- A minimum GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in the last three years of high school
- Secondary school completed by the end of the spring term before fall enrolment
- English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo) unless high school was taught entirely in English
For Fall 2027, applications through Cal State Apply are accepted from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, and official transcripts should follow within two weeks. Offers are usually sent in March; admitted students confirm by paying a non-refundable US$100 deposit by 1 May and then request an I-20 with proof of financial support.
