Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is a private Catholic university in Los Angeles, California, rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. It has three campuses in the city: the main Westchester campus, the Loyola Law School campus downtown and a campus in Playa Vista. LMU has more than 7,000 undergraduate students and more than 2,800 graduate and law students, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, and it is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). LMU lists itself as the 6th private university in California in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 ranking.

LMU offers more than 50 master's, doctoral and certificate programmes, with graduate programmes for international students in every college of the university, plus law degrees at Loyola Law School. International first-year applicants apply for autumn (Early Action, binding Early Decision and Early Decision II, or Regular Decision) or for spring entry, and submit:
- Common Application with LMU Supplement, Coalition Application or LMU Application
- Proof of English proficiency
- Full secondary school transcripts in English, with certified translations of documents not in English
- A letter of recommendation from the last school attended
- Audition or portfolio for some arts programmes
SAT or ACT scores are not required for international students. An InitialView or Vericant interview is recommended but optional. After admission, the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) issues the I-20 for the student visa. Contact: [email protected].
Minimum English scores for undergraduate admission (one test required):
- TOEFL iBT: 90 for tests taken before 21 January 2026; 4.5 on the new scale for tests taken after that date
- IELTS: 6.5
- Duolingo English Test: 120
- PTE Academic: 56
Students with the International Baccalaureate Diploma or A Level examinations do not need to submit an English test.
International first-year applicants are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships, based on academic achievement and test scores, with no separate application; amounts range from $2,000 to $30,000 per year. No need-based financial aid is available for international students. LMU also points Latin American and Caribbean students to the OAS Rowe Fund, which grants interest-free loans of up to $15,000, and to private (alternative) student loans.
More than 3,200 students live on campus in traditional residence halls, suites, apartments and theme houses. LMU encourages first-year students to live in university housing; for autumn entry, housing is guaranteed to first-year students whose tuition deposit is postmarked by 1 May, and the housing application is sent after the deposit. Requests from transfer students and spring applicants depend on space. The Off Campus Student Life office supports students living off campus.
