The Conservatorio de Musica de Alcañiz, or the Alcañiz School of Music, is one of the most renowned music academies in Spain. The school opened in 1982 under the direction of Ms. Maria Luisa Martinez Serrano. It began with three teachers, who were soon joined by several other instructors as new musical specialties were added and the enrollment began to grow.
From 1982 to1985, what is now known as the Conservatorio de Musica de Alcañiz was academically supervised by the Conservatory of Music in Zaragoza, and between 1985 and 1987 the school was attached to the Conservatory of Music of Teruel.
The school became known as the Conservatorio de Musica de Alcañiz in 1987. Its activation was authorized by a city order on September 25, 1987, authorizing lessons in Music Theory, Set Coral, Piano, Violin, Cello, Guitar, Clarinet and Trumpet. Several other training classes have been introduced and implemented over the years, making the school one of the largest of its kind in Spain.
Alcañiz, in which the Conservatorio de Musica is located, is a town and municipality in the province of Teruel, in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. The town is located on the banks of the river Guadalope. Alcañiz is the unofficial capital of the Lower Aragon historical region. Its distance from Teruel, the provincial capital, is 149 kilometers and from Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, 105 kilometers.
Alcañiz is also the capital of the Bajo Aragón comarca and the second city in the province after Teruel.
Some of the main sights for students to visit while studying at the Conservatorio de Musica of Alcañiz include the Church of Santa María la Mayor, which includes a medieval Gothic tower; the Lonja de Alcañiz; and the Casa Consistorial (Town Hall; 1565-1570). A few kilometers from the city are the rock paintings of the Val del Charco del Agua Amarga, included in the UNESCO Heritage Site Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula .
