HZ University of Applied Sciences

HZ University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences in Zeeland, in the southwest of the Netherlands. It has campuses in Vlissingen and Middelburg and runs the Joint Research Center Zeeland. Teaching is practice-oriented and linked to applied research on themes such as water, energy and food, carried out with businesses, organisations and government partners.

For international students HZ offers English-taught programmes:

  • Bachelor's programmes
  • A two-year master's programme in River Delta Development
  • Exchange programmes for a semester or a year
  • Minors (one-semester programmes taught in English)
  • HZ Honours Programme alongside a bachelor's degree

Exchange and Erasmus students coming under an agreement with their home university pay no tuition fees to HZ. Admission depends on the chosen field of study and the applicant's level of English. Students who apply before 1 May are guaranteed housing for the duration of their studies through the housing partner APV Housing, and short-term accommodation for one semester is also possible. Non-EU students on technical and sustainability-focused bachelor's programmes can apply for the NL Scholarship of €5,000.

Fees

Tuition fees for the 2026-27 academic year depend on nationality and programme:

  • Tuition fee for a full-time bachelor's or master's programme: €2,694 per academic year
  • Institutional tuition fee for a bachelor's or master's programme: €9,893 per academic year

Exchange and Erasmus students under an agreement with their home university pay no tuition fees to HZ. Fees can be paid at once or, with a SEPA bank account, in ten instalments (€24 administration fee).

Scholarships and financial aid

The NL Scholarship of €5,000 (two instalments of €2,500, for one academic year) is open to students from outside the EU who have not studied in the Netherlands before, have IELTS 6.5 or equivalent and hold a letter of acceptance for an eligible bachelor's programme: Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Global Project and Change Management, Industrial Engineering & Management, ICT, Logistics Engineering or Water Management. Applications go to [email protected] before 1 May 2027. It does not cover full tuition and living costs.

Housing

Students who apply to HZ before 1 May are guaranteed housing for the duration of their studies through the housing partner APV Housing. Accommodation is available in both Vlissingen and Middelburg:

  • Student room with shared kitchen or bathroom
  • Studio with own facilities
  • Apartment, alone or shared

After registering at HZ, students book their room themselves on a first-come, first-served basis; one-semester stays are possible. Current listings range from €300 to €700 all-in per month in Vlissingen and from €220 to €600 in Middelburg. Students may also find accommodation independently.
