Lebanese International University (LIU)

The Lebanese International University (LIU) is a private, non-profit university governed by an independent Board of Trustees and recognised by the Lebanese State as a private higher education institution. It was established in 2001 as Bekaa University and took its current name in 2005. The main campus is in Mouseitbeh, Beirut; further campuses in Lebanon include Bekaa, Rayak, Saida, Nabatieh, Tyre and Tripoli, and there are international campuses in Yemen, Mauritania and Senegal. The university states that it has more than 28,000 students.

LIU offers more than 65 majors leading to bachelor's and master's degrees, taught in English on an American-style semester and credit-hour system. New students usually start with a freshman year before entering one of five schools:

  • School of Business
  • School of Engineering
  • School of Arts and Sciences
  • School of Education
  • School of Pharmacy

Tuition is charged per credit. Financial aid is available to students on application, except in the School of Pharmacy, and fees can also be paid in instalments. Applications are submitted online or at an admissions office.

Programmes

  • Freshman year (at least 30 credits in Freshman Arts, Sciences or Engineering)
  • Engineering: biomedical, computer, electrical, electronics, mechanical, surveying, communications and industrial engineering
  • Business: business management, economics, financial sciences, accounting, marketing, hotel and tourism management, management information systems
  • Pharmacy
  • Education: basic education (English, mathematics, sciences), TEFL, early childhood education, translation and interpretation
  • Arts and Sciences: advertising, biochemistry, biology, biomedical science, chemistry, computer science, IT, food science, graphic and interior design, journalism, mathematics, nutrition, physics, public relations

Language requirements

All teaching and communication at LIU are in English. Undergraduate applicants take an English entrance exam.

Scholarships and financial aid

Students can apply for financial aid at their campus business office, giving details of their family's income and who finances their studies. A board reviews each application and sets the percentage of aid. Students of the School of Pharmacy are not eligible for financial aid. Instalment payment plans are also available.
