Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) is a public technological research university in Houghton, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a few miles from Lake Superior. Founded in 1885, it holds the Carnegie R1 classification and has more than 7,400 students from over 60 countries. According to the university, The Wall Street Journal ranks it No. 3 among US public colleges for salary impact.

Michigan Tech offers more than 185 bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes in science, engineering, technology and mathematics, as well as business and the arts, through these colleges:

  • College of Sciences and Arts
  • Pavlis Honors College, Graduate School and Global Campus (online graduate degrees)

Research spending is $124.2 million. International undergraduates apply through the Common Application and must show English proficiency; there is no ESL programme. All first-year students live on campus, and Hillside Place offers apartment-style housing open to international students. Houghton gets more than 200 inches of snow a year, students ski free at the university's Mont Ripley, and the campus hosts the Parade of Nations multicultural festival.

Master's and doctoral degrees through the Graduate School, with one-on-one graduate-to-faculty research projects, accelerated master's degrees and certificates for Michigan Tech undergraduates, and online graduate degrees and certificates through Global Campus that lead to the same degree as on campus.

Admission Requirements

Students who need a visa to study in the US apply as international students. First-year applicants:

  • Apply through the Common Application and pay the US$35 processing fee (no fee waivers for international applicants)
  • Have official secondary school transcripts covering the last three years sent directly by the school, with English translations
  • Submit an English proficiency test score (unless exempt)
  • Provide any country-specific exam results requested (e.g. CBSE, WAEC, GCSE/A-levels)

There are intakes in January (spring) and August (fall). After acceptance, students submit an Affidavit of Financial Support with proof of funds for one year and a copy of their passport to receive the I-20.

Language Requirements

All international undergraduate applicants must prove English proficiency with a test taken within two years of enrolment; waivers are not accepted (except for exempt countries or prior US study) and there is no ESL programme. Minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT 79 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.5 (from 21 January 2026)
  • IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in speaking and writing
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 510; ACT 18 in English and reading
  • PTE 53; Duolingo 120

Housing

All first-year students live on campus; 2,713 students live in the residence halls. First-year halls are Douglass Houghton, McNair and Wadsworth, each divided into smaller "houses". East Hall has semi-private suites for transfer and second-year-plus students, and Hillside Place offers apartment-style living for transfer students, second-year-plus students, students aged 21 or over and international students. First-year residents choose an unlimited or 19-meal dining plan.
