Musikene, the Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco (Higher School of Music of the Basque Country), is a public music conservatory in Donostia / San Sebastián, subsidised by the Basque Government. It was established by the Basque Government in the 2001-02 academic year (Decree 73/2001) to provide higher education in music. Since September 2016 it has occupied a building on Plaza Europa, on the San Sebastián university campus.

Musikene awards the official Grado en Enseñanzas Artísticas Superiores de Música, which has the same validity as a university bachelor's degree. It takes four years (240 ECTS credits) and is offered in these specialities:

  • Composition
  • Music Education (Pedagogía)
  • Choral and Orchestral Conducting
  • Classical Performance, including accordion, organ and txistu
  • Jazz Performance

The school also offers five official master's degrees in arts education (Máster en Enseñanzas Artísticas), equivalent to a university master's degree, with entrance exams held online. Official teaching languages are Spanish and Basque, and international students can take free Basque and Spanish courses. Musikene has taken part in Erasmus since 2003-04. Entrance exams for the bachelor's degree take place in person in June.

Graduate programmes

Five official master's degrees in arts education (Máster en Enseñanzas Artísticas):

  • Orchestral Studies, string instruments (60 ECTS, one year)
  • Jazz Performance (60 ECTS, one year)
  • Contemporary Music Creation (120 ECTS, two years)
  • Music Performance (120 ECTS, two years)
  • Music Mediation, Management and Dissemination (120 ECTS, two years)

Entrance exams are held online, in March and June. The masters include research credits that give access to doctoral studies. Musikene also runs postgraduate courses for holders of a higher music qualification.

Language requirements

Teaching languages are Spanish and Basque; group classes are mainly in Spanish, and the language of individual lessons is agreed between teacher and student. Musikene offers free Basque and Spanish courses to foreign students who request them, and reduced prices for English and German courses.

Musikene has taken part in Erasmus since 2003-04. Incoming exchange students apply through EASY Mobility Online between 15 February and 15 March, for either semester.

Duration

Bachelor's degree: 4 academic years, 240 ECTS. Official masters: one year (60 ECTS) or two years (120 ECTS), depending on the programme; part-time enrolment is possible in all masters.

Scholarships and financial aid

  • AIE grants: two grants of 3,000 euros each for classical and jazz performance students
  • Igartza Musika grant (Beasain Town Council): 2,200 euros for a fourth-year classical or jazz performance student
  • Basque Government grants for residents of the Basque Country
  • Spanish Ministry of Education general grants for students resident elsewhere in Spain

Fee exemptions and reductions exist, for example for large families (50% or 100%), students with a disability of 33% or more and holders of Matrícula de Honor.
