New Brunswick College of Craft and Design

The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) is a public college of art, craft and design in the historic Garrison District of downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, with over 80 years of history. It is a small college of no more than 300 students, and international students make up a significant part of the community. Programmes combine hands-on studio learning with business training.

  • Foundation Visual Arts, a one-year preparatory certificate
  • Fine craft diplomas: ceramics, fashion design, jewellery/metal arts, textile design
  • Digital diplomas: 3D digital design, graphic design, photography/videography
  • Wabanaki Visual Arts, a diploma focused on traditional crafts of the Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik and Passamaquoddy peoples

  • Bachelor of Applied Arts, an articulated degree with the University of New Brunswick

All programmes start in September. International full-time tuition is CA$10,261 for the 2026-27 academic year. NBCCD has no on-campus housing, but students can live in residence at St. Thomas University through an agreement with the college.

  • Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Jewellery/Metal Arts, Photography/Videography and Textile Design diplomas
  • Wabanaki Visual Arts diploma (Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik and Passamaquoddy traditional crafts)
  • Advanced Studio Practice, after an NBCCD diploma, a BFA or equivalent experience
  • Bachelor of Applied Arts: 4 years, 2 at NBCCD and 2 at the University of New Brunswick

Admission

International applicants must meet the regular academic criteria and English requirements. All programmes start in September; there are no winter or spring intakes. Applicants select "International Student" in the online application, upload a portfolio and pay the CA$100 application fee. Without equivalent visual arts training, students enter through Foundation Visual Arts. Official transcripts must be emailed by the school, with a notarised translation if the language of instruction was not English. An online interview may be requested. Seats are limited and offered first come, first served, so early application is advised; admitted students apply for a study permit with the acceptance letter and a provincial attestation letter (PAL).

Language requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English, or who did not attend an English-medium institution, need one of:

  • IELTS Academic 6.0 (no band below 5.5)
  • TOEFL iBT 80 (no section below 18)
  • Cambridge English 169 (no component below 162)
  • Duolingo 110 (at least 90 in each band); CAEL 60; CanTEST 4.5 (no subtest below 4.0); PTE Academic 65 (no part below 60)

Applicants below these levels may receive conditional acceptance through the English for Academic Purposes programme at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton.

Fees

2026-27 academic year, international students (Canadian dollars):

  • Full-time tuition: $10,261 per year
  • Application fee: $100 (non-refundable)
  • Confirmation deposit: $2,000 (credited to tuition) and emergency medical insurance $600, due within 30 days of acceptance
  • General fees such as student association ($240) and technology ($320) per year; studio fees from $200 (Foundation Visual Arts) to $1,400 (Ceramics)

New international students pay first-semester tuition by 1 August of their start year.

Housing

NBCCD does not provide on-campus housing; students rent in downtown Fredericton, and the Fredericton City Guide has housing information. Students who want residence life with dorm living and a meal plan can live in student housing at St. Thomas University under an agreement with NBCCD, a 20-minute walk or 5-minute bus ride away. The college estimates CA$8,400 (shared) to CA$13,200 (solo) a year for accommodation and utilities.
