Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a university based in Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. Its main campus lies at 2,100 metres (7,000 feet) among pine forests, within reach of the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and Phoenix. NAU also teaches online and at more than 20 other locations in Arizona. It offers more than 450 undergraduate and graduate degrees and programmes, in fields such as:

  • Engineering
  • Business and hospitality
  • Computer science and data science
  • Health professions and nursing
  • Environment, sustainability and forestry

According to the university, more than 700 international students from over 70 countries study at NAU. The Center for International Education supports them with admissions, visas, housing and cultural adjustment, and the Program in Intensive English (PIE) helps students who still need to reach the required English level. Complete international applications are automatically considered for scholarships. Exchange students from Europe need at least CEFR level B2 in English. More than 10,000 students live on campus, and there are over 400 student clubs.

Programmes

Undergraduate degrees grouped by area of interest, for example:

  • Business and hospitality: accountancy, actuarial science, applied business management
  • Engineering: civil, computer, electrical, environmental
  • Computing and data: computer science, business analytics, cybersecurity
  • Environment and forestry: environmental sciences, ecology and evolutionary biology
  • Health professions: biomedical science, dental hygiene
  • Life and physical sciences: biology, astronomy
  • Social sciences and justice: anthropology, criminology and criminal justice
  • Education, communications and media, construction management

Admission

International applicants (students who need a US visa, usually F-1) apply online and provide:

  • Application fee: $50 for undergraduates, $75 for graduate students
  • Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if not in English
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Copy of passport
  • Bank statement and financial sponsor form covering estimated tuition and fees, plus $6,000 per accompanying dependent, needed for the I-20

Graduate programmes may ask for further items such as letters of recommendation.

Language requirements

Minimum English scores for international applicants:

  • TOEFL iBT: 70
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall
  • Duolingo English Test: 95
  • PTE: 56
  • Exchange students from Europe: CEFR level B2

Citizens of English-speaking countries need no further proof. Students below the requirement may take a placement test on arrival and/or enrol in the Program in Intensive English (PIE) until they reach the required level.

Scholarships and financial aid

International applicants are automatically considered for scholarships once their NAU international application is complete. International students can also work on campus and pay tuition through payment plans.
