Northern Michigan University (NMU) is a four-year public comprehensive university in Marquette, a city of about 20,000 on the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, United States. Founded in 1899 as Northern State Normal School, it has over 6,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Its 360-acre campus has 52 facilities, including the Superior Dome, a large wooden dome used for sports and recreation.
NMU offers over 190 degree programmes, from certificates and associate and bachelor's degrees to more than 25 master's degrees and a doctorate, through the colleges of Arts & Science, Business, Health Sciences and Professional Studies, Technology and Occupational Sciences, and Graduate Studies and Research. Students receive a laptop with software and internet access as part of their education.
International students come from over 40 countries; degree students study on an F-1 visa issued through NMU's International Programs Office, and academically strong international undergraduates automatically receive the International Academic Award. Residence halls follow a House Model that splits large halls into groups of 50 to 60 students, and there are over 300 student organisations.
