Oakland University (OU) is a public doctoral research university in Rochester, Michigan, in the Greater Metro Detroit area. It began in 1957, when Alfred Wilson and Matilda Dodge Wilson donated their estate and $2 million to Michigan State University to create a satellite school, Michigan State University - Oakland. OU has more than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students and a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. According to the university, it is the only public university in Michigan that charges no fees beyond tuition.

Undergraduate and graduate programmes, certificates and endorsements are offered through these schools and colleges:

  • Arts and Sciences
  • Business
  • Education and Human Services
  • Engineering and Computer Science
  • Health Sciences and Nursing
  • Medicine
  • School of Music, Theatre and Dance

Students can join research from their first year and take internships with corporate partners. International students can enrol as degree-seeking undergraduates or through the American Semester Abroad Program (ASAP) for a semester or a year; applying is free. Citizens of Canada and Mexico may qualify for in-state tuition. Over 2,500 students live on campus in five residence halls and two apartment complexes, and OU competes in NCAA Division I athletics.
