Seattle University is a private Jesuit, Catholic university founded in 1891 in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It has more than 7,200 undergraduate and graduate students in six schools and colleges, and two campuses in the city: a park-like campus on First Hill and a smaller urban campus in South Lake Union. The student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1.

The university offers more than 60 undergraduate majors with minors and specializations, and more than 50 in-person and online graduate programmes, including 28 accredited graduate degrees such as the MBA, JD, MSCS, MFA and DNP.

The student body includes students from 78 countries; 862 international students were enrolled in 2024, and about 8% of undergraduates are international. International first-year students apply through the Common Application and must prove their English level. Applicants with slightly lower test scores can be admitted with the English Language and Cultural Bridge (ELCB) programme. An International Student Center supports students on campus, and on-campus housing with kitchens and laundry is available on both campuses.

Admission Requirements

International first-year applicants use the Common Application (transfer students use the Seattle University Transfer Application) and pay a US$60 application fee. Requirements:

  • Transcripts for at least three years of secondary school, with certified English translations, plus national exam results (e.g. IGCSE, WAEC, Gaokao)
  • Two letters of recommendation: a teacher and a school counselor
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • The International Pre-Financial Information Form

Competitive applicants typically have the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA. SAT and ACT are not required. Applications should be submitted at least three months before the term; new international students cannot start in the summer term. After admission and enrolment confirmation, F-1 and J-1 students submit a Declaration of Finances with bank statements for the I-20 or DS-2019.

Language Requirements

Undergraduate applicants whose first language is not English need one of these scores for direct admission (lower ranges allow admission with the English Language and Cultural Bridge, ELCB):

  • TOEFL iBT: 86 (ELCB: 68-85)
  • IELTS: 6.5 (ELCB: 6.0)
  • PTE Academic: 58 (ELCB: 48-57)
  • Duolingo: 120 (ELCB: 105-115)
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 500, or ACT 20+ in reading and English

Cambridge, IB and WAEC English results and ELS level 112 are also accepted. Nursing, Diagnostic Ultrasound and the 3+3 law programmes require the direct-admission level.

Fees

Undergraduate tuition for the 2026-27 academic year (full-time flat rate, 12-18 credits): US$19,800 per quarter or US$59,400 for the academic year (fall, winter and spring quarters). Additional 2026-27 fees include a US$60 application fee, a US$500 enrolment deposit for first-year students (required of international students in all start terms) and a US$400 first-year orientation fee. Housing and meal plans are charged separately.

Housing

On-campus housing includes residence halls and apartments on the First Hill campus and The Commons in South Lake Union, with kitchens and laundry. Residential Learning Communities group students around a shared theme. There are separate housing applications for first-year, continuing, transfer, and graduate and law students, and the university provides resources for finding off-campus housing in Seattle.
