Sidcot School

Primary and secondary school in Winscombe, The United Kingdom

Sidcot School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 3 to 18 in Winscombe, North Somerset, about 30 minutes from the centre of Bristol. It was founded as a Quaker school in 1699 and, on reopening in 1808, became one of the first schools in the UK to admit both boys and girls. Quaker values still shape school life, and its rural campus lies in the Mendip Hills. The school has more than 500 pupils, including around 160 from over 30 countries.

  • Pre-School and Junior School

Boarders receive full board, laundry, healthcare and most extra-curricular activities; weekly and flexi boarding are offered subject to availability. Applicants from Year 7 upwards take a Maths and English assessment, which is not a pass-or-fail test, and pupils can join during the year if places are available. Overseas students must have a responsible guardian in the UK, and the school publishes guidance on international admissions and visas.

Admission

Sidcot does not use the Common Entrance Examination. Applicants from Year 7 upwards sit an assessment in Maths and English, which is not a pass-or-fail test. Most pupils join in September, but pupils can also start during the year if there are places in the year group. Prospective pupils can attend a taster day. A non-refundable registration fee is payable from Reception onwards, and international boarders pay a deposit of £5,000 to secure a place (£1,000 for a one-term stay).

Housing

Sidcot is a boarding school. Full boarding includes full board, laundry, healthcare and most extra-curricular activities (not those needing individual specialist tuition). Weekly and flexi boarding are offered subject to availability; most boarders are full-time. Students from overseas must have a responsible UK guardian aged over 25, either a friend or relative or one appointed by a guardian agency.
