Southampton Solent University

Southampton Solent University, usually called Solent University, is a university in the city centre of Southampton, on the south coast of England. Its main campus is at East Park Terrace, within walking distance of Southampton Central station, and its Warsash Maritime School has a separate campus at Warsash that trains Merchant Navy officer cadets. Solent offers more than 100 undergraduate, postgraduate and apprenticeship courses, with a practice-led approach and links to industry, and students of over 100 nationalities.

Courses for international students can start in January, May or September. For applicants from Spain, Solent looks for qualifications equivalent to British A-levels, and students at its Spanish partner institutions may be able to enter the second or third year of a degree. Pre-sessional English courses and an International Foundation Year run by QA Higher Education prepare students who need to improve their English. Solent also welcomes incoming study abroad students who have completed at least one year at university. All four student residences are in the city centre, no more than a 20-minute walk from the main campus.

Undergraduate BA (Hons) and BSc (Hons) degrees, many also available with a foundation year or a year in industry, plus top-up degrees and apprenticeships. Example subject areas:

Taught master's degrees and postgraduate certificates, for example the MSc Applied AI and Data Science (also with a placement or part-time) and the PGCert Advanced Palliative and End of Life Care Management and Prescribing. Many master's degrees have a January as well as a September intake. Solent also offers research degrees through its Graduate School.

Admission Requirements

For applicants from Spain, Solent looks for qualifications equivalent to British A-levels; art and design courses also require a portfolio. Postgraduate applicants need a qualification equivalent to a British bachelor's degree. Students at Solent's partner institutions in Spain (CEV Escuela Superior de Comunicación, Imagen y Sonido; ITES; Miami Ad School Madrid; microFusa; Universidad de San Jorge) may be able to enter the second or third year of a degree. Most students apply directly; Solent also has official representatives in Madrid and Seville. EU students who did not live in the UK before 2021 need a Student visa.

Housing

Solent has four student residences in Southampton city centre, none more than a 20-minute walk from the main campus. Rent includes all utility bills, Wi-Fi, personal contents insurance and a 24-hour residence support team.

  • Kimber and David Moxon: en-suite rooms for first-year undergraduates
  • Deanery: en-suite flats for undergraduates, postgraduates, maritime officer cadets and exchange students
  • Chantry: 208 single rooms, mostly non-en-suite

Options include postgraduate, quieter, accessible and LGBTQ+ accommodation and short stays. The SASSH scheme helps with private housing.
