Southern English College (SEC) is an English language school in the Central Business District (CBD) of Sydney, Australia. It is a registered CRICOS provider (code 03613B) and, as an ELICOS provider, follows the ELICOS Standards 2018 and the ESOS Act 2000, which protects international students. It has two campuses: the main campus at 95 Bathurst Street, within walking distance of Town Hall and Museum stations, and a second campus in Haymarket, close to Central Station.
The college teaches two courses, both face to face at 20 hours per week:
- General English, from Starter to Advanced, in levels of 12 weeks
- English for Academic Purposes (EAP), a two-level, 24-week programme that prepares students for undergraduate study at an Australian university
Students must be at least 18 and take a placement test on arrival. Services include academic and welfare support, airport pick-up when booked in advance, pre-departure information, an orientation programme and accommodation support on request. Facilities include a student lounge with a kitchen and free wifi. After applying and paying the deposit, students receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500).

- General English (CRICOS 108792K): six levels from Starter to Advanced, 12 weeks per level, to communicate in everyday situations
- English for Academic Purposes (CRICOS 095482B): EAP 1 and EAP 2, 12 weeks each (24 weeks in total), focused on critical thinking, academic writing and presentation skills for university study
Both courses are taught face to face, 20 hours per week, usually 5 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, at 95 Bathurst Street (Sydney) or at Level 1, 191 Thomas St (Haymarket).
Applicants complete the enrolment form (online or PDF) and send it by email with supporting documents, which can include:
- Certified copy of passport
- Certified copy of the highest qualification, with translation
- Evidence of English language ability
- Statement of purpose (genuine study intention)
- Evidence of financial capacity for the visa
- Carer arrangement form, if applicable
For General English, students must be at least 18 and have completed high school. Successful applicants receive an offer letter and student agreement; after paying the deposit they receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to apply for a student visa (subclass 500).
General English: all students take a placement test on arrival and are placed at the right level. English for Academic Purposes:
- EAP 1: IELTS 5.0, PTE Academic 36 or TOEFL iBT 35 (or equivalent), an Intermediate result in the pre-entry test (onshore only), or completion of General English Intermediate
- EAP 2: IELTS 5.5, completion of EAP 1 at SEC, or an Upper Intermediate result in the SEC placement test
