Strathmore University is a university in Nairobi, Kenya, on Ole Sangale Road in Madaraka Estate. It began in 1961 as Strathmore College, an Advanced-level Sixth Form College started by a group of professionals who formed a charitable educational trust, now the Strathmore Educational Trust; Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei, encouraged its foundation. The college merged with Kianda College in 1993, received interim authority to operate as a university in 2002 and was later awarded a university charter by the Government of Kenya. It has 8,189 students, 11% of them international.

Teaching is organised in schools and institutes:

  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
  • School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH)
  • Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS)
  • Strathmore Institute of Management and Technology (SI)

Programmes range from undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees to diplomas, professional qualifications such as CPA, ACCA and CFA, and short courses. Admission involves sharing academic certificates, an interview and an entrance exam. A Financial Aid Office runs several financial aid schemes, and student life includes sports, drama, debate, music, clubs and optional chaplaincy programmes.

Admission Requirements

Admission has five steps: choose a course, share academic certificates, book an interview, sit the entrance exam and pay the fees.

  • Undergraduate: interviews every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m.; candidates bring passport photos, ID or passport and their academic certificates, including KCSE results
  • Graduate: applicants must meet the programme's entry requirements and pass the Graduate Entrance Exam, a 90-minute written test (English, arithmetic and an essay) followed by an oral interview; the application, with two references, certified transcripts in English and a Europass CV, is sent by email
  • Applicants with foreign qualifications need a Letter of Recognition from the Commission for University Education (CUE) and, where required, English proficiency results
