Summer School of English is a small, family-run English language school based in Wimbledon, London. It was started in 1975 by the mother of the current director, Cecilia Gregory. The school offers summer English courses for children and teenagers from the age of 5; the courses themselves are non-residential, but older students can stay with a host family. To keep a mix of nationalities, the school does not take large groups from any one country or school.
Courses start every Monday during the summer, with a minimum stay of one week. On arrival, each student takes a test and an interview and is placed in a class, from complete beginner to advanced. Lessons cover speaking, listening, reading and writing, grammar and pronunciation, and include project work, drama sketches and creative activities. All teachers are native English speakers. Students receive a certificate of attendance and a report at the end of the course.
Outside class, the programme includes outings to museums, historic palaces and tourist attractions, and sports such as football, bowling and tennis. Students aged 12 and over can stay with a local host family on full board; places are limited.

Housing
Students aged 12 and over can stay with a vetted host family living near the school, within walking distance or a short bus or Underground ride. Normally only one student of each nationality is placed with each family. Families provide breakfast and dinner every day, a packed lunch from Monday to Saturday and all meals on Sunday, and do the laundry. Students arrive and leave on a Sunday, with a minimum stay of two weeks. Places are limited, so early booking is recommended.
