About London
London is the capital of the United Kingdom. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), London's population grew by 7.7% between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, a gain of almost 626,000 people, and in 2021 it had 5,598 residents per square kilometre, more than 14 times the average in England and Wales.
Students come to London for the range of what it offers: research universities, specialist colleges for the arts, film, business and cooking, and dozens of English language schools. Rents are the highest in the UK, so a realistic budget matters.

Specialist colleges include London Film Academy in Fulham, a registered higher education provider with the Office for Students and an approved partner of the University of Derby, and Chef Academy of London, whose courses combine kitchen training with live training in partner restaurants. Among the language schools, SKOLA runs English summer schools for ages 5 to 17 and is accredited by the British Council, and the family-run Summer School of English in Wimbledon, started in 1975, teaches young students aged 5 to 16.
Cost of living for students
Rent is the largest cost. According to the ONS, average private rent was highest in London, at £2,332 a month in August 2026, compared with £788 in the North East. Student halls cost less than renting alone: LSE's halls, for example, range from £152.60 to £328.30 a week at Butler's Wharf Residence and from £200.20 to £310.45 a week at Rosebery Hall.
The UK Student visa also sets a higher amount for London: students must show £1,529 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London, in addition to their course fees. This is a minimum for the visa, not a full budget.
Visas for students
Courses of up to 6 months at an accredited institution, including English language courses, can usually be taken as a Standard Visitor. English courses of more than 6 and up to 11 months need a Short-term study visa, which costs £228. Degree courses need a Student visa, which costs £558 from outside the UK. After a degree, the Graduate visa allows 2 years in the UK if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027. Always check the current rules on GOV.UK before you apply.
Getting around and daily life
Transport for London (TfL) runs the Tube, buses and trams. With pay as you go, the bus and tram Hopper fare gives unlimited journeys within one hour of touching in for £1.75. Full-time students aged 18 or over who live in a London borough during term time can apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard (£22 administration fee), which saves 30% on adult-rate Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets; a monthly Bus & Tram Pass then costs £66.50. The course must have at least 15 hours of teaching a week and last at least 14 weeks.
