SUNY Oneonta is a mid-size public university of the State University of New York, founded in the late 19th century. Its 250-acre campus sits on a hill above the city of Oneonta, in central New York State (United States), about halfway between Albany and Binghamton. A second campus in Cooperstown hosts graduate programmes in museum studies, biology and lake management.

The university offers 58 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programmes (master's degrees and certificates, in person or online), and guarantees hands-on learning opportunities to its students.

International students apply through the Common App or the SUNY Application with a US$50 fee, and admissions are rolling. All international and out-of-state undergraduates automatically receive the New York State Advantage Award of US$8,000 per year, renewable for up to four years. First-year students live on campus in double rooms in renovated residence halls.

Admission Requirements

Admissions are rolling, and a decision usually follows within a few days of a complete application. International undergraduates apply through the Common App or SUNY Application (US$50 fee) and submit:

  • Official secondary school transcripts in the original language with an English translation; non-US university transcripts evaluated by a NACES member
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Bank statements showing at least US$33,990 and the university's financial statement form
  • A 250-500 word autobiographical essay in English
  • A letter of recommendation and a copy of the passport photo page

Language Requirements

Minimum English scores for international undergraduates: TOEFL iBT 75, IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 110, PTE 53, iTEP 3.7 or completion of ELS level 112. Some transfer applicants from accredited US colleges with an associate degree may be exempt.

Financial Aid

International undergraduates are guaranteed the New York State Advantage Award: US$8,000 per year, renewable for up to four years (up to US$32,000), with no separate application. The university awards more than US$9.4 million in merit- and need-based scholarships each year, and some graduate students receive scholarships or graduate and teaching assistantships.

Housing

All first-year students live in double rooms, usually with one roommate, with a shared bathroom on each wing. Many residence halls have been renovated and offer fitness centres, kitchens, computer labs and free laundry machines. More housing options are available after the first year.
